What's the deal playing Games on Xeons?

Back in the 1366 days maybe, but on modern platforms Xeons can't be overclocked. On the modern platform the best you are going to get is 6-Cores/8-Cores at 3.8GHz.

If we are talking about 1366, that is Nehalem. So ~40% slower clock for clock than Haswell. So a 4.5GHz 1366 Xeon would be slower in games than a stock 4790K.

I thought that was the case, too. Yet a couple days ago I was on OCN looking at the Xeon threads (curious after all the Xeon talk in the WCG forums) and stumbled on this thread:

Apparently there are E5 series Xeons on LGA 2011/X79 that have unlocked multipliers and people are running them at 4.4ghz+ (and some even breaking 5ghz). Sneaky little perk of X79- just have to wait until the big chips take a dip in pricing like the 1366 Xeons have recently

I had a bunch of Xeons, the only thing I liked is cheap as dirt ECC RAM that could be found on ebay, because of the obcsure naming nobody bids on them.

Take in consideration that those overclocks are not for 24/7, are overclock just to test how far those chips can be pushed.

To slightly side-step, and not being sure of the exact corollary, several years back, I built a system for me based on the AMD Opteron (a 185 Denmark, if I remember right), and was able to overclock it a good bit. The nice thing about the Opties was the stability. That thing was rock solid, and never had a penny's problem with it. The Opty and the Xeon are supposed to be business class, so they are a bit more exacting in their standards. I thought of it kind of like buying a Honda vs a Fiat. I might find a faster Fiat, but the Honda was going to keep going a lot longer with less issue.

Me too! I had a great Opteron 170 rig. I replaced it with a C2D E6600 and I still say my Opty rig felt "snappier" than the rig I replaced it with. I have the whole thing in a box and have always meant to rebuild it for kicks.

I guess there's not that much difference when playing on Xeons if you put a nice gpu on the Machine.

It has a GTX 780 and standard Intel DX58SO2 consumer motherboard. No, not much difference, just the same as if it were say an i7 990X.

To answer the OP's question, there is no "deal" with playing games on a Xeon CPU. You and whomever else wants to can do just that. As others have stated, there are other CPU's "tailored" for this purpose; however, Xeon CPU's are quite capable of allowing you to play games.

Super PI is a horrible way to compare CPUs... It may do a good job of giving the illusion that core2duos are as good as modern CPUs However.

The program I use for PI calculations...
21.8 seconds to calculate 32M with one thread and one core.
0.331 seconds to calculate 1M with one thread and one core.
5.024 seconds to calculate 32M with all cores, and multithreading.
0.163 seconds to calculate 1M with all cores, and multithreading.
2871.121 seconds to calculate 10B with all cores, and multithreading.

Well, they are usually because they come with more cores and thus clock lesser than a smaller core design.

GENERALLY. Obviously there will be exceptions, some of which may be owned by our users here. But they are still potent cpus no matter how you cut it.

What about an E5-1620v3 allowing you to go with the 2011-3 platform, DDR4, 40 PCIe lanes and 10MB L3 cache, for a similar price of the i7-4790K? A slight trade-off of clock speed which could be offset with a mild OC on the right board.

i7-4790K would have a pretty big advantage in older games because of the 500 MHz clockspeed difference. It also consumes about half the power. FCLGA1150 costs a lot less than FCLGA2011-3 (more than enough to offset the cheaper Xeon price).

Beyond that, you have to keep in mind that Xeons support EEC and if ECC memory is installed, it has higher latency than non-ECC. Higher latency means fewer frames per second.
