Why 4K DSR works at 144Hz in some games but doesn't in others?!

I've changed both, framerate and the refreshrate settings. Game is still forced at stupid 60Hz that makes my eyes bleed.

Try setting the MaxSmoothedFrameRate variable to something like 500 and see how that goes.

makes no sense!. because before I modified the MaxSmoothedFrameRate to 144 or 120
62 fps was the frame rate with vsync off . and with vsync on i got 60 fps.

Funny thing that the game does not respect the Nvidia 3d setting of vsync. (and it seems that now the in game vsync does not matter)
(on my computer running win10 build 10565, nvidia 355.98 )
perhaps it is because i am using a Gsync monitor...

which is to say that MaxSmoothedFrameRate is the setting that determines the refresh rate.

what ever i set it to is the frame rate i get... 85, 144, 288 (but at a setting of 288 fraps/afterburner reports 236... "she's giving all she got" lol, because the GPU usage is 97%)

yes, my gtx980on a 1440p monitor at 1405g/7600m (boost included) gets 236fps when MaxSmoothedFrameRate is set to 288.
on DSR 2.25x 4k i get 108fps. around

on a 4k monitor around 106fps to 120.

I have that set to 144 and it's 60Hz at 4K DSR. I'll try higher values today. I always get some moronic fringe problems lol. I mean, I bet there are tons of users with 1080p screens that can use 4K DSR, but maybe 1% of them has 144Hz screens. The rest is at 60Hz anyway so they don't even notice this like ever since they are stuck at 60Hz all the time. But when I get downgraded from 144Hz to 60Hz I quickly notice it. On desktop I can sense the weird mouse pointer motion that gives away 60Hz instantly. And in games, 60Hz means my eyes start to hurt. Literally. And when that happens, I check the on-screen info (resolution and refresh) and that's where I see what's actually being used.

Copied BaseEngine.ini file from first game to the second. Because the first one worked at 4K 144Hz. Nope, again locked to god damn 60Hz. Fucking hell.

Ok, I figured out something. If I set desktop resolution to 3840x2160 (4K) in Windows, I can set refresh to 144Hz and the game then also uses 144Hz. However, because of scaling, desktop is all fucked up with tiny elements, blurry text and huge ass cursor.

Any idea how to simply and in an elegant way force 144Hz for 3840x2160 resolution? Every time I change from 1080p to 2160p it resets to 60Hz. But if I could force it just for this resolution, the games would also use 144Hz every time I'd use DSR in games. Don't know why NVIDIA can't fix this crap for so long (I've seen stuff dating back to 2014).

So, any tool or method to force it just for 3840x2160 resolution?

Also, what's the difference between these two modes...
DSR_WTF.png

It seems like some games pick one "profile" that can operate at 144Hz and some games pick the other one that is stuck at 60Hz max. WHY!? Why can't I just force it at 144Hz !? I don't want shitty 60Hz...

They BOTH turn my 1080p display into 4K resolution, so they apparently both work the same.

Same thing happens when you use a dual link HDMI cable?...

I should mention that i use the dual link DVI cable included with my asus 1080p vg278. (Does not have display port)
but i don't think that should make any difference, because i use displayport on the acer 1440, and 4k. (Gsync)

I have a nec 24" 1080p displayport and will see if i have the same problem that you have with 60/144. (although the Nec is only a 60hz screen... )

try changing vsync in game. apply, Then change the resolution. apply. the proper vsync state should work.

so perhaps your problems will be solved, if you change from 1080p to 4k, in game.
Then change the vsync to off, apply, then change to resolution to 1080p. apply, then change to resolution back to 4k.

When you change the vsync setting in Alien Breed2 : assault.
Apply your setting.
then change the resolution. (to 1080p from 4k lets say) apply.
your vsync setting will now be as it should be.
then change the resolution back (to 4k to 1080p)
fixed. or should be.

the info about MaxSmoothFrameRate still applies...

if this does not work, well it will be a SNAFU sort of situation.

OH F**K'in Hell,
you need to change the resolution in game for the VSYNC to be set to the "proper" value. if you don't you get random vsync meanings... could be the opposite, could be stuck off. will check windows 7, if this same thing happens.

(an aside, in GTAV on WIN10, sometimes after the graphics settings have been changed in 4K resolution, the FPS takes a huge dive, the way to get it back to normal is to either change to 1080p and back to 4K, or restart the game at 4K... this is a WIndows 10 driver issue because this does not happen in windows 7)

wow, all off my previous posts are now called in to question because of this...

but have you tried a dual-link HMDI cable...

In any case, i just tried the NEC monitor (see specs)...with a displayport cable. no change in the previous experiences. (i can not duplicate your problems.)

the monitor refresh rate and desktop refresh rate is 60 hz... and afterburner reports 288 for 1080p, ~120hz for DSR 1080p.

some where in my system, for this game there is a vsync unlock. meaning it seems that with this game I can not get a fixed 60 fps in any way, it seems the even with the Nvidia vsnyc setting "ON", and the game vsync to "ON" i get the max FPS... due to [b}maxframesmoothrate[/b] set to 288.
i get the max frame rate that the gtx980 can do.

so i have the opposite problem you do with this game...

update, so i went to play GTAV, crashed, so i reset the the 3D settings.

and now the vsync in alien breed is working as in should! ... that was a surprise. i have reset it on the previous Gsync monitors to no effect!.

VERY WEIRD!. vsync on 60hz, vsync off 288hz... as should be expected...
OMG!... turned on DSR, goto game, set 3640 res in game. and now the VSYNC is the opposite it should be!... "vsync on" is really vsync off. ...

Only way to make it work everywhere is to manually force entire desktop to 3840x2160 at 144Hz and then run the game. Which is moronic since stupid NVCP could do this automatically when you request a 4K resolution from the driver. Instead, it once picks the 144Hz 4K mode and in some stupid cases, 60Hz 4K mode. Why, I have NO clue. But if I force it at that resolution and 144Hz, it will always work in all games. Not sure if there is any special performance penalty or anything, but I got it working this way in Alien Breed 2 and 3. In Alien Breed 1, it worked at 4K 144Hz directly by selecting 4K mode in game resolution selection.

Downside to forcing it means desktop that is all blurry and a lot of clicking for something that should work automatically (and properly).

what can i say, i have the desktop resolution, and i have the in game resolution... Which switchs to DSR when i select the 4K resolution. In alien breed 2, vsync off / change resolution to lower/apply then change resolution to higher/what-you-want works for me.

no problems, except for a similiar problem in GTAV that causes areally lower frame rate. which is fixed by the changing the resolution lower/ then to higher.

perhaps get a new hdd, set aside your old hdd, and install a clean copy of win 10 to eliminate any problems of modified settings... and see if the problems you are have are cleared up. install alien breed 2 and only change MaxSmoothFrameRate...
If adter all the work of a clean install, and the problems still happening, try a new monitor.

I can not dupicate your problems on any of my monitors...

Is any of your monitors 144Hz ? You really need 144Hz one to test. And even then, there might be a thing with clock generators/chipsets. Mine is apparently using Ancor according to NVCP.

Yes. I have a 144hz 1440p monitor (hk270hu) ...

and i tested in with dsr 2.25x 4k on a desktop with 144hz. Loaded the game, (MaxSmoothFrameRate is 288)

Yes, vsync on at 1080p or 1440p resolution is 144hz, but vsync on in 4k, i get 60Hz. Which i believe is your problem.

YET, when i switch to vsync off at 4k DSR in game, the FPS 114. (Remember after you set the vsync to off, and apply it , switch to 1080p, apply, then switch to 2160p.)

when i set the desktop Refresh rate to 60, the vsync on FPS is 60 with 1080p, and 1440p and 2160p.

and when i switch to Vsync :disabled (off) i get 114- 120 hz. (As fast as the gtx980 will go)

you must switch to a different resolution in game apply it, then switch back to the resolution you want.

To sum up, in alien breed 2, a desktop refresh rate of 60, applies to vsync on all resolutions.

But a desktop refresh rate of 144, applies to (Vsync: enabled) at all resolutions BUT the 4K resolution (3840x2160)

Switching the vsync requires you change the resolution, apply, and then apply the resolution you want.

or restart the game after the vsync mode has been changed.

TL;DR. Set the resolution in game to 4k, then set vsync:enabled, apply, and restart the game. you should get a rate as fast as your card can display the frames.

BTW ancor is asus... My 120hz asus vg278h is reported as ancor in NVCP.

So, either way, the thing is broken. Constantly fiddling with resolutions and even V-Sync settings just isn't the way. Now I at least know it's the NVIDIA driver that's actually broken, because it is possible to run 4K at 144Hz, it's just that driver fucks it all up and can't do it. But if you fiddle with it, it can do it. It's just the fiddling part that is annoying as hell...

Gotta get someone from NVIDIA to talk with regarding this. NVIDIA Forums seem to be utterly useless for this as I've NEVER got any reply from anyone, not even ordinary members like myself, let alone anyone actually from NVIDIA...

Alien Breed 2:Assault is to blame. It is not a TWiMTBP game, so NVIDIA is not going to help.

the switching resolutions is a problem with alien breed 2: assault. It is the only way to get the vsync to stick, without restarting the game.

I feel the same way about NVIDIA, but about the DSR+SLI+GSYNC monitor isssue...
Otherwise no problems.

the only way to get DSR running on a GSYNC monitor is to turn off SLI, or use a single card...

Game shouldn't care what settings you use. Because if I force it on desktop, the game will ALWAYS use it. But if I don't, then it doesn't work. Meaning DSR function is broken and doesn't work as it should. It's the switching mechanism that is broken.

Also, TWIMTBP doesn't matter at all.

But DSR is not broken...
the switching mechanism is not broken...
for me it works exact as it should.

And i do not have to set anything in the NVCP to get if to work. (Of course, DSR has to be set there)

i have vsync in NVCP set to "3d application". (everything is stock, aside from DSR settings, of course.)

I can not prove it exactly, because i do not have your monitor, i have the previous version of your asus monitor Meaning 120Hz. check my system specs. My current system consists of the components that are listed first in each category... The rest are what i have in "storage".

I also an fx-8350 gtx680 system... Win8 pro.

Does GTAV work? Or does it have the same problems AB2:assault does?

The only broken thing about it is that it won't work when you use two NVIDIA Cards in SLI on a GSYNC monitor.
I had no problems getting DSR to work. Aside from the game restart / resolution switch up/down to effect the vsync setting in the AB2:assault...

perhaps AMD's version of DSR works better for alien breed 2:assault?...

Try nvidia driver 355.98... Nvidia's 358.50 (most recent) reduces the frame rate of GTAV to 75% of the previous driver. meaning on true 4K, i get 45FPS, but on 355.98 i get 60FPS. (SLI)

Then explain to me why it doesn't work without major fiddling with settings and forcing the stuff on desktop so it takes over on the game as well? When I do that manually, it works every single time without exception. But when I let drivers do that, it doesn't work most of the time. Who is it to blame then? If it would be still locked to 60Hz after setting it manually on desktop, then I'd blame the game, because it would override desktop settings. But in this case, it doesn't.

Ok, I get it that GTA5 may limit Hz because the game eats so much framebuffer you may have problems using 4K DSR. But between Alien Breed 1 and Alien Breed 2, nearly zero difference in graphics, yet 144Hz work sin one but not in other.

I've found that if you go into Screen Resolution, then click Advanced Settings, then go to the Monitor tab, there is a checkbox that says "Hide Modes This Monitor Can't Display". Unchecking it greatly increases the number of games that work with DSR/Custom Resolutions and Refresh Rates. This, for example, is the only way I can get GTA:V to run at 120Hz on my monitor.

odd, because i don't have to force anything.(of course, DSR needs to be set in NVCP)

I just have to remember with AB2: Assault (for VSYNC to be applied) you either have to change the resolution to a lower res, apply, and then change it back to the resolution that you want OR restart the game for the VSYNC mode change to work.

(BTW, to turn off DSR i have found that you need to reset the NVCP settings to default using the "restore button" at the bottom of the 3D options pane.)

Hm, it's unchecked and greyed out in my case...

funny thing, i have never had any problems with GTAV running at 120hz.
I just set the frame rate in the game.
(i don't force anything in NVCP)...
