Microsoft has officially pegged its much-vaunted Creators Update for an April 11th Release (it's actually been available in its "RTM gold" state for some time via leaks on the web and even briefly via their own update tool, but there will surely be security patches between now and the release).

As far as features go, this update focuses a lot on features that Microsoft says enable users to "Unleash Creativity." This includes an update to the paint application that enables 3D functionality, improved support for Mixed Reality, a new "Game Mode" to dedicate resources to games, and a lot of features relating to broadcasting. Outside of the "creativity" theme, Microsoft claims it brings "new features to Microsoft Edge, additional security capabilities and privacy tools, and so much more."

Of all the features mentioned above, Paint's 3D update seems to be getting the most attention. Apparently Paint now allows you to even transform your 2D art into 3d models, and you can also visit a Microsoft run site, Remix3d, to get other models to "plug-in" to your own final work of art.

So far, it has the claims to be an interesting update, whether it has the functionality to back it up is something we have yet to determine.

PS: If this editor sounds a bit reluctant to talk about how well any of the above features work, there is a reason for that: I haven't tried it yet. I plan on dedicating some time to a "firsthand experiences" trial with it sometime this week, if there's enough interest.

I'm interested, even though I will be "deferring" my upgrade for the maximum 6 months allowed, to allow them to get rid of all the bugs that show up just like happened with the Anniversary update.

Does it still contain Dolby Atmos? It was mentioned just after Christmas that it'll be in this patch but I haven't seen it stated since.

I did not see it mentioned here either, interesting. I'll watch out for that in my hands on.

USB Audio Class 2 driver was supposed to be coming too...

Yay! More features that I neither need nor want but will have shoved down my throat because our overlords dictate so!
[/obligatory anti-win10 rant]
Well, someone has to do it!

Edit: Apparently TPU omits anything that looks like html tags even if it wasn't. Changed the "<" to "[" above.

this will be my option as well, OverWatch kept Fu$king up when anniversary update dropped..... NOTHING shall interfere with Overwatch lol

Why not move to linux then? you agreed to ms's terms when u installed your OS

Assuming that A\ I installed it, and B\ Linux was a choice. But should we really derail this thread? Heck, I already did!

Heard they're finally axing Control Panel with this one. Makes me wanna puke just thinking about it. Hopefully God Mode still works. If not there's going to be some severe losses in terms of functionality.

EDIT: Then I just read it's not going to be totally gone yet. But is on it's way out soon. We'll see I guess.

Supporters of the Control Panel continue to make the case that the option should stay with Windows 10, though Microsoft is now showing its resolve to remove it in the future.

Nevertheless, it is likely that the Control Panel will still be available when the Creators Update rolls out, but not for long. The Control Panel is expected to depart by the time the Redstone 3 update arrives in the fall.

It's not gone yet.

Dolby atmos is there, but disabled until release (it leads to a timed-release store app when you try to turn it on, could be commercial, no idea).

In good news: There are many many more options for deferring updates.

Full report tomorrow.

I'd go back to 7 if it was feasble. Microsoft has gimped Windows Update for Windows 7 and 8 now, as they did for Vista before. You have to use a 3rd party tool to get it working when you install a fresh copy. Bugs the hell out of me. Plus there's no Windows Store, so I couldn't play Forza Horizon 3; literally the only thing I use the Store for.

Win 7 Windows Update worked fine for me yesterday.

Everything since Windows 7 I like. XP for me was like a chore. I was so happy with 7 when I finally had decent support for my native language and many other improvements. Win 10 for me is a breeze. Can't complain about that.

Hopefully this will work fine at launch, however as it took them until a KB update this month to fix the flaw in 1607 that was causing widespread issues (after they had made it a mandatory update) I'm not holding my breath.

I manually updated to the creators build here
i plugged in a set of razer USB headphones and that showed up in the settings - selecting it too me to the MS store where it then says its unavailable with no way to install or purchase.

No problems here on windows 8.1! Updating our systems manually! :)
I never had any problems updating my windows 8.1 systems yet.:)
Even my dads windows 7SP1 laptop does the updates without problems now.

Why do people use win 10 and whine about it? If you don't like it, go back to win 7.
right, i didnt know win7 supports the ms store, dx12, 3d paint, xbox streaming, security updates after 2020, new hardware support

if MS isnt aware that there is a problem, how can there be improvement? no progress is made if concerns arent raised, this isnt the nazi party full of yes men following orders

such a shortsighted useless comment, if you dont defend the right to criticism, then you dont deserve any help when the time comes where you have a problem

no you dont, you can update fresh https://decentsecurity.com/windows-7-fast-update/ (i have not done this method, but have done specific KBs to fix WU in the past)

poor code from years ago that exponentially gets slower over time (due to checking prerequisites) does not mean it was gimped now, it's not easy to build such a dependency system or to know how it reacts years later

at least forza has another option, an xbox, the price isnt that much considering the pc version demands a good gfx card

Honestly man I've been running it on both of my work rigs and the Anniversary update for me has been the most stable windows yet.

anniversary has been my default install by choice for a while now - thanks to the thread i linked above i have ISO's for each build and disable windows update, and stay on them and manually upgrade everything at once when i find a build i like.

Anniversary has been 100% reliable, and even works when transferring OS between wildly different hardware (AMD laptop -> core 2 duo desktop -> skylake desktop with only needing to reinstall USB drivers, W10 did the rest automatically)

edit: to be clear newer builds are fine too, but IMO anniversary is when W10 became 'why bother with anything else?'

It was much more stable when I reinstalled it at the 6 month deferment limit. I agree it is great now.
