For those who upgrade between succeeding versions of Microsoft Windows, the upgrade installer can be cumbersome. There are way too many prompts and clicks. Microsoft is working to make the upgrade package of its next major version of Windows, for now referred to as Windows 8, streamlined to as few as 11 clicks. The new installer will be designed to perform most of its tasks without needing user input.

Microsoft will implement a new web-delivery method, where you purchase your Windows 8 license online, and the installer downloads your soft copy to you. It is pre-fed with your 25-character product key. Microsoft's next major Windows release is slated for 2012.

web delivery? thats interesting, so it downloads its own installer.

that's pretty neat.

i am still waiting for the day where you can buy a license online and then net boot into a MS server and download/install the operating system in one fell swoop.

Does anyone know what Windows 8 is going to offer the gaming community?

Ok and for those with a rather cumbersome net connection and a daily cap?

DX11.1 ?

If it's more stable and less demanding than the current OS, and utilizes resources better, then it's offering a lot to gaming community. Question is whether it'll be to 7 as 7 was to Vista.

Clean Install

Like many, an upgrade is not a good option. A clean install is.
Will this download be an ISO (burn a DVD or USB Key)?

Meh.... unattend answer file... We shouldn't have to use those to be able to do this in "11 clicks", it should be by design. Theres a whole lot more clicks before that to make it 11.

Yeah, installing a new OS over the old one, is just asking for trouble, i don't care how streamlined they make the process.

New OS = Clean install

Used to do this with Win98 making it all automated (CD) And yes i know you can do it with Vista and 7 too ), i just hope you can add what you want so you can trim it as much as you want too.

I think DX's are moving way to fast for game makers to actually focus on a DX version.. A good quality game takes 3+ years.

8 clicks too many IMO, unless of course there are issues that the user needs to resolve. 11 is far too many. WHAT are they thinking that "11" is a goal to trumpet! Really, 1 click to accept install, 1 click to accept license agreement, and 1 click to confirm default standard installation not custom.

(Actually, today, it is 12 clicks too many. You shouldn't even run the installer and should stick with XP ... ;) LOL)

this has a lot of piracy potential :D

No sir, pirates love'm pirated copies of windows on physical media. Don't forget it comes already fed with the product key. Most pirated version of windows comes with a crack or product key bypasser so its easier to have it on media while not connected to the web. :toast:

Great stuff for Win8, finally catching up to good old linux 2003 standard procedures.

With the horrible disgraced state that linux is in now I can see that Win8 would sell like hotcake and get all Ubuntu users to switch to Win8 only.

You go NSA Win8 wake up the linux community, give them something to get ticked off about so they can fix Linux from Gnome3* / KDE4* back to usable no gimmick not BS linux again.

this is off topic, but i will bite. you can't say that "linux" is in a disgraced state and only cite the GUIs often associated with the operating system. since you are referring to gnome 3 i assume you really are upset with ubuntu's decision to go gnome 3, not the entire linux development community. in fact, even with ubuntu you can still change the GUI to gnome 2 or any other varient. and every linux distro by nature can be changed into whatever gui you want. what's more, you can design your own GUI if none suit you. i would say linux is in excellent shape!

why do we need windows 8?

why do we need windows 8?

Cause Microsoft needs more money. They figured out a new OS sooner than the lapses before could surely rake in more cash.

because of ARM support?? Tablets are so gimmicky imo anyway.

Are there any more reasons to use 8 over 7? 2-10% better performance for bulldozer is all i know
