with the release of the new 45mn quads comming soon, i have been spending alot of time looking into what quad i should be looking at, it seams the new quads will end up being pritty shtty and as usless and tits on a bull because of there 8X multi so i started looking back at the Q6600 when i was there was a Xeon X3220 wich seams to be exactly the same as the Q6600, what i am wondering is the X3220 a cherry picked Q6600, use less volts, or is the only diferance in the name???

I've had both of these chips, and currently run the x3220 in my rig. Here are the differences: The x3220 will clock higher on lower vcore. For instance, I can clock 3.3ghz on 1.28v, and maybe lower, but my board won't go lower than stock vcore. The chip also stays cooler than the Q6600 on higher vcore too. I can clock 3.85ghz on 1.52v, and never reach more than 62c on any of the cores.

I dont think the Xeon chips support all these instructions though MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3 i may be wrong and i do apologies if i am but i didnt think server chips did ive never owned one myself.
It might have an impact on gaming/video preformance.

nonsense, Xeon chips are great! x3210 ftw

"The processor supports all the existing Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) and
Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3). The processor supports several advanced
technologies including Execute Disable Bit, Intel® 64 architecture, and Intel®
Virtualization Technology (VT)."
straight from the datasheet.

thats exactly what i am trying to work out, every thing i find says the two cpus are exactly the same in every way(x3220 v q6600), but i was unsure if the x3220 were just the cream of the crop so to speak...

actualy there is one thing i have found and its reguarding "Intel® I/O Acceleration Technology (Intel® I/OAT)" what ever the hell that is...

http://www.intel.com/technology/ioacceleration/index.htm

but i am not sure if this is for ALL Xeon processors...

This is quite interesting i may look at a server cpu myself especially if they can hit 4ghz easier. Ive had my Q6600 to 4.3ghz and that was a struggle didnt like the temps much either.

im topped out at 3.8 on my q6600, I think it is my mobo though(its getting old).

Weird, I can get to 3.8 and run it all day and night, but the second I go higher, CRASH!

I have always wanted to switch to a x32XX, but never did, once I bought my q, I figured I would just suck it up and deal with it.

But if I could do it over again, I would get a xeon.

Well i just read this thread it seemed he hit a wall at 3.6ghz which is my current speed for 24/7 operation and i manage it on less voltage? 1.360v It seems i have a cherry picked quad.

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/291593-log-x3220-overclocking.html

thats just one persons results. I have ran into many members here that have their x3220s over 4ghz easy, with voltages below 1.5.

I have even seem multiple x3210's above 4ghz.

1.36 volts is nice, I have to run my quad at 1.55 volts at 3.8. Sometimes during heavy benching Ill have to jump up to 1.58 also. I think my problem is my mobo though, I have heavy VDroop that I just cannot get rid of.

VDROOP, my P5b suffers horribly from it! It actually settles around 1.47 during loads. And i think the inconsistancies is what makes that necessary

ye i get vdroop also i have to set it to 1.41v to settle it out at 1.360v i know when its stable though because when i stress test if the voltage drops below 1.312v in cpu-z then the pc reboots as long as it keeps at 1.312v or above during testing its 100% stable at 3.6ghz.

P.S. Also the vid on mine reads 1.270v mosts quads are 1.34v

Umm why? You already have a Q6600. They are essentially the same thing, except the Xeon will run on lower voltage an higher speeds. At 3.4 gig to let's say you get a 4.0 gig speed 24/7 you won't notice much of a difference. Hell even going from AMD to Intel doesn't yeild much real-world difference, just a bigger EPENISMARK score.

totally totally disagree

Going from the best AMD quad(phenom 9600) to the cheapest Intel(q6600) is night and day. Any benches can prove that. And not everyone only games. Most people considering a quad core and looking for raw CPU power, whether it be for SETI, Folding, Video Work, converting, whatever! and then overclock that q6600 and you can destroy the performance of the phenom by getting to 3ghz. Take it up to 3.8Ghz, and your proc power will be amazing.

Now you tell me thats not a noticable difference. And that lower voltage that you get from a xeon will give you better temps and more stability - tell me thats not worth it.

Yeah, any BENCHMARK will prove it. Today's cpus are so powerful it's hard to max out even an Athlon x2. Sure you will get a bigger EPENISMARK score but for the money it's not worth it.

Espically going from a Q6600 to a Xeon X3220.

what about video rendering? or for the rest of us, even simple DVD conversions, or compressing movies. All those processes really use the proc.

Now Im gonna be honest, I loved my e6600, it served me well for DVDs and movies ect. But I really wanted the extra two cores for SETI. Now that I have them, I will never ever give them up. They make intense tasks a breeze.

I can run many many apps, I like to convert a DVD to AVI, and browse the web, and do whatever else I want. With my e6600 I was havin to sit back and wait for stuff to finish to move on. Think about it, 200 for a decent dual core, 250 for a decent quad, 50 bucks with twice the performance, why not.

And if your info EPENISMARKS, then why not get a better quad, you really cant discredit someone for that
