XFX RX 480 GTR Performance Results

@Durvelle27

Sweet card :) . If I was in the market for a RX 480 to me the GTR seems the one, like the cooler/black plate, VRM is great and better power sourcing than ref PCB.

I would concur with Kanan that do some benches with HT disabled. From when I was thinking shall I get an i7 or i5 a lot of "stuff" I read pointed towards games don't benefit from HT and for some games it has a negative impact on performance. I understand you use rig for rendering but IIRC it's just a case of switch on/off HT in mobo bios.
I did end up doing some HT off test with no change.

Like mentioned above i knew the problem wasn't the CPU. It was the GPU the entire time. After enabling in game monitoring i noticed the GPU clock would drop as low as 300MHz and sometimes wouldn't go above 600MHz let alone the stock clocks causing terrible Frame drops.

But after replacing the TIM and adjusting the thermal pads the problem has been sorted out. Card now holds boost the entire time and runs below 70°C under full load.

HTT off was just out of curiousity, not because of any problems associated with your GPU.

Btw. can you post some pics of the whole system? Would be nice.

I have to say I am impressed with the 480. I just ran Tomb Raider at 1440p ultimate settings, TressFX on FXAA on, with my XFX 290 overclocked at 1037core/1275mem and these were the results:

Min fps: 40.7
Max fps: 64
Average: 52.5

You have a better max fps than me, but I have a better min. fps. Dat memory bandwidth, yo.

I was impressed with the GTX 480 back in the day.

480's always rock!

I have to rebench though as I had underlying issues that since have been fixed

I will have to set my overclock higher now that it isn't 90+ degrees in my area ;)
Run it again whenever and I will max my OC and we can compare FPS.

Not bad but gpu clock could be way higher.

Well that's on stock voltages

I've gotten upto 1395/2155
Undervoltage is interesting too. I would try all 3 - under, stock and overvoltage + benches you can post here.

I tried under volting at 1395 and untying under 1150 (stock) would crash and artifact

Undervoltage with different overclock of course, as far as it goes. I just know rx480 is power limited always so it helps a bit with that if you don't want to touch power limit (for gaming 24/7 oc).

Best I could do is 1365 @1000mV

same as my reference 480, it wouldnt hold clocks. Hopefully RMA will sort it out and i get a proper, working card back in a week or 2

I fixed my problem by replacing the TIM

i wasnt willing to void warranty with Sapphire as they are pricks about that kind of stuff :P lesson learned and will choose a better brand next time :)

There was a video released by jayztwocents featuring a light review of this card, no real benchmarks, just temperatures and overclocking.

The results he got were nuts, nuts to the point that I remain dubious. Something like 64c under load running @ 1475 which smells like bottom shelf horseshit to me but hey, I'm glad it's working for the OP.

Don't forget he's using open test bench, so the temps are way better. But I think you're partly right, I guess his chip is a very good one, a absolute exception. Note: his Ref AMD RX 480 with EK watercooler only did 1430 tops - even with watercooling and those lower temperatures. I guess XFX sent him the best chip they found or so, a absolute lottery winner.

Mine requires a voltage bump just to hit 1400 I can only imagine 1470

Your GPU is like most then, maybe a tad better. But that one from Jay is another dimension. Probably he can hit way over 1500 with it, if he tries or installs watercooling on it.

Holy what the? Is that a DDC pump and res you have sitting on your gpu? You crazy or just liek to live dangerously?
Yep pump/res Combo on that Gpu

I like to live on the edge :rockout:
