The Xigmatek Achilles S1284 heatsink has many improvements over the famous HDT-S1283 cooler. There are now four U-shaped heatpipes, and they are nickel-plated. The fan design is new and unique as well, with its white LEDs that light up the fan's smoke frame and orange blades.

Awesome review T_ski as always.

Did you find that the installation of the rubber fan holders into the fan itself a pain in the ass? When I got my HDTS 1283 in March and I went to put it together, that was the biggest pain for me. Getting the thin ends into the fan mounting holes. Other than that, it made great contact with my cpu. I did the same check you all do when you are doing your tests.

On this model, I like the additional heatpipe and also the 2mm extra diameter on the pipes. This should allow for a tad bit lower temperatures compared to its brother. On my oc, Mine runs idle at around 29c (according to cpu temp and software readings) On load, its around 41C.

I like the white LEDs on here. Id prefer a tad better more powerful fan than what Xigmatek usually includes, but it gets the job done.

One major beef I have, and really caught on to yesterday, is when you mount the cooler, it doesnt have a way for you to mount it with the air blowing out the back of the case. With the cooler I have, its blowing down onto the bottom of the case, granted I have a fan attached on the outside of my window side to bring in fresh air (the original HDTS 1283 is too tall to have it on the inside) but that can only help so much, especially given I got one intake and one outtake fan (big gripe about the Sigma Luna W case.)

Other than that, this looks a tad better with flow, though it doesnt have the spoiler to direct some of the airflow on the mosfets and such.

It's not a bad fan really, there could just be a better one there. The biggest problem for me was first, putting the robber holders into the fan holes, then putting the cooler on with the AM2 bracket retention mechanism. That made me think I was gonna break either the bracket or the cooler or the retention bar itself or even my mobo.

Well, I know what I'm buying next week! lol... I love my cooler I have now.. but hell... I like that review!

yeah, Im gonna keep mine for awhile and maybe go this next go around or water :D

Hey ColdStorm, how much of a difference did that Scythe Fan making in cooling performance compared to the stock Xigmatek fan?

Damn it the hell!!! ::scream::

I'm guessing you wasn't very happy when you posted that wareagle :) reminded me of cartman lol,
But thats a seriously nice cooler cant seem to find any xigmatek coolers in the uk to even know how much they are.
Good review.

I would love a fan that looks like that, preferablly in the 2200 RPM range.

Nice review. I like the fan myself. Looks to be a nice cooler but i am more then happy with my 1283 till i get the money to get TEC cooling :D

same the fan is pretty mint ,same my 1283 is good enough with my q6600 tec cooling eh pos pc im thinking of it but costly and dangerous but worth a go for the temps :p

same thing i was thinking it is risky and cost alot but you gotta love the low temps. I was thinking 200+w tec on my BE that should give some nice temps if not a 400w+would

i think 160w tec myself after some lapping 1st and gota get the relay de electric grease and whats not

Keep an eye out for the "today only" stuff as I got one a few weeks ago with 5 quid off that price. I kinda wish I'd waited though now. :o

I got about a 3c-5c difference. The only thing I would say to people about the fan, is that its LOUD! I have two of them running. All my fans in the system is over 110cfm's but I made sure that the Scythe was hooked to the CPU and behind it... That way no Vortec was going to happen. If you want a Good CFM fan that isn't the sound of a vacuum, then try the Silverstone 110cfm fan.. I had to put a fan controller on the fans so I could keep it going while I was at work! lmao

I'm planing to go water, but I'll try anything Air first... I don't have a CPU that requires to much volts, and I tend to keep it low 24/7.

Nice Review, but would have been nice if you had included other coolers than Intel stock? Its hard to compare?? For an example, I would want to know if it cools better than my current TR 120 Xtreme??

In fact, it's on offer today 'til 12pm monday! £17.63 inc vat. You have to click it on the today only list otherwise it charges full price.

Naw Gam, I wasnt mad, was just putting out there my experiences with the cooler.

@Cold, thats a worthwhile temp difference though. If I ever get the galls to take it out and get a new fan, Ill look into it. The fan I have on the Xigma now (the stock one) isnt loud at all. In fact, the loudest fan is on my HIS IceQ3 HD 3870. Noise doesnt really bother me though. If it cools, that is awesome. I would like for them to create a different mounting mechanism so that we can install the cooler facing towards the back to keep the airflow in line.

The Gx2 fan at 100% (I run it 24/7 there) is not even as loud as the two Kaze's ... But, I do like them. My next step is to just buy a Delta fan and see how it is! I'd just have to get my fan controller on it! lol

Yeah I hear ya. As I said I dont mind noise, Id rather hear a little noise than lose life of my components. This cooler here is definitely top notch. I noticed on Petras that Sunbeamtech/Tuniq has a Direct Heat Pipe cooler out now.

My computer is near my TV, so the noise isn't a problem what so ever! lol I need to grab a few more Kaze's in my case! lol..

Nice HDT seems to be the way :rockout: all the better for us.

Wareagle: I was thinking of fans, and went to Petra's Tech Shop.. I really like the Sunbeamtech does look sweet and Frostytech gave it #1 stats... But, I think I'm still going to go with the Xigmatek one.. The Sunbeam has "paperclip" like hooks for the fans.. No thank you really... But, I am going to grab up two of these fans!! :rockout: Then another two scythe fans...
