GIGABYTE Announces AORUS Gen4 SSD Series without Heatsinks

GIGABYTE was among the first to the market with a PCI-Express gen 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD, with its AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD series from June 2019. Those drives are characterized by bulky copper heatsinks. The company decided to launch variants of the drive that lack this heatsink, and instead using only a thin copper peel that works both as a heatspreader and as a product label. The rationale behind this product is to let people use the M.2 heatsink that came with their motherboards. The lineup consists of 1 TB (GP-AG41TB) and 2 TB (GP-AG42TB) variants, and introduces a new 500 GB variant (GP-AG4500G) that's not available in the original lineup.

The underlying drive is identical. It combines a Phison PS5016-E16 controller with 96-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory over 8 channels, and a DDR4 DRAM cache (512 MB for the 500 GB variant, 1 GB for the 1 TB variant, and 2 GB for the 2 TB variant). All three variants offer sequential read speeds of up to 5000 MB/s. The 1 TB and 2 TB variants offer up to 4400 MB/s sequential writes, while the 500 GB variant offers up to 2500 MB/s. The 1 TB and 2 TB variants further offer the same 4K random-access performance numbers of 750k/700k IOPS (reads/writes), while the 500 GB variant offers up to 400k/550k IOPS. GIGABYTE is backing the drives with 5-year product warranties. The company didn't reveal pricing.

GIGABYTE Outs AORUS RGB Memory with AORUS Memory Boost Feature

GIGABYTE expanded its AORUS RGB DDR4 memory family with two new kits that introduce a proprietary performance enhancement dubbed AORUS Memory Boost. Exclusive to GIGABYTE's AORUS-branded motherboards (listed below), and requiring a BIOS update to use, AORUS Memory Boost is a toggle that runs the memory at a clock-speed and timing combination that's a notch above its highest Intel XMP profile. For example, the memory kits debuting with the feature today feature an XMP 2.0 profile for DDR4-3600. Flicking on AORUS Memory Boost runs them at DDR4-3733, in essence making it an additional memory profile that's exclusive to GIGABYTE motherboards.

The memory kits being launched today are GP-AR36C18S8K2HU416R and GP-AR36C18S8K2HU416RD. The former is 2x 8 GB (16 GB) dual-channel, while the latter is 2x 8 GB (16 GB) with two dummy modules. These dummy modules fill up vacant DIMM slots, look and light up like real modules, and could boost the aesthetics of your build without having you spend on two additional real modules. Out of the box, the memory modules (real ones) in these kits run at DDR4-2667 with 19-19-19-43 on Intel processors and 20-19-19-43 on AMD ones. The included DDR4-3600 XMP profile has timings of 18-19-19-39. GIGABYTE didn't mention how AORUS Memory Boost affects timings. Out of the box, the module voltage is 1.2 V, and the XMP profile dials it up to 1.35 V. The dummies work with whatever module voltage you specify in the BIOS, and interface with GIGABYTE RGB Fusion software. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Dozens of GIGABYTE Intel 400-series Chipset Motherboards Show Up at the EEC

Intel is inching closer to the launch of its socket LGA1200 mainstream desktop platform based on its 400-series chipset and 14 nm "Comet Lake-S" silicon. The platform provides a forward upgrade path to the company's 10 nm "Ice Lake-S" processors when they come out. "Comet Lake-S" is a derivative of the "Skylake" microarchitecture that's been scaled up to 10 CPU cores, and HyperThreading enabled across the board, with clock speeds pushed to the limits of the 14 nm silicon fabrication process. The TDP of some of these parts is reportedly set as high as 125 W. GIGABYTE is ready with dozens of motherboards for these processors, based on one of five chipsets - Z490, H470, Q470, B460, and H410.

The Intel Z490 Express will be the top-end chipset geared toward gamers and enthusiasts wanting to overclock their processors. The H470 will be a slight step down, and possibly lack multi-GPU and CPU overclocking support. The Q470 is its twin with certain enterprise-relevant features. The B460 is the mid-range chipset, targeting a spectrum of users including gamers who don't overclock their CPU. The H410 will be the entry-level chipset for everyone else. What's interesting about GIGABYTE's list of motherboards filed for regulatory clearance from the Eurasian Economic Commission, is that is looks partial. There are far too few AORUS-branded products.

X499 or X299G? Intel's Fall 2019 HEDT Update Heralds a New Chipset?

Our readers spotted an interesting visual detail that missed us during our coverage of GIGABYTE's three new socket LGA2066 motherboards unveiled at Computex 2019. One of the three boards, the X299S Designare 10G, has the hard-marking "X499" on its CPU VRM heatsink. Another detail that strikes us is that none of the three new boards we pictured has "X299" printed on the PCB anywhere. The Designare 10G has a sticker below the printed GIGABYTE logo that reads "X299G Designare 10G." The purported X299G Aorus Master has another interesting detail: right above the "Aorus Master" print, there's a tiny sticker marked "X299G," positioned as if it's covering up a printed marking on the PCB itself.

All these details lead us to wonder if GIGABYTE tried to cover up that these boards are in fact based on the unannounced X499 Express chipset, and made to appear like they are X299. We only have paper stickers and the booth placards that indicate "X299," while a metal embossing on the Designare 10G's VRM heatsink reads X499. Intel in its Computex 2019 keynote announced that it will introduce new Core X HEDT processors. It's been over 2 years since the first Core X "Skylake-X" processors launched in Q2-2017. Intel refreshed the lineup in 2018 with 9th generation branding and soldered TIM, with a few specification improvements across the product-stack, but a largely unchanged silicon. It's likely that the Fall 2019 release could see new chips with increased core counts, perhaps even the fabled 22-core die, and some hardware mitigation against recent security vulnerabilities.
