MARSHAL Announces a Trio of External Storage Solutions

Japanese company MARSHAL announced three new external storage solutions, which include two 2-bay enclosures and one 4-bay dock. The two enclosures are MAL-3235SBK (non-RAID mass-storage, USB 2.0), and MAL-3335SBKU (RAID mass-storage, USB 3.0); and the dock is MAL-3635SBK. The two enclosures bear essentially the same product design, that consists of two 3.5" SATA drive bays, differing only by the MAL-3335SBKU supporting RAID 0 and 1 modes, and USB 3.0. These enclosures measure 73 x 195 x 123 mm (WxDxH), use external power bricks, and cool installed hard drives using a rear fan.

The MAL-3635SBK is a one-of-a-kind top-loading 4-bay SATA drive dock, which supports both 3.5" and 2.5" drives on each bay. The main unit is merely a cuboidal box, with an ABS stand extending out, holding the four drives firmly in place. This dock is designed not essentially keeping external storage in mind, and more as a drive cloning station. For this reason, the dock connects to the host over slow USB 2.0, but packs a native drive cloning logic that can auto-clone three drives from one template, at a time, without needing a host. The dock measures 164 x 126 x 88 mm (WxDxH). The MAL-3235SBK, MAL-3335SBKU, and MAL-3635SBK, from MARSHAL, are priced at 3,580 JPY (US $42), 4,980 JPY (US $60), and 9,980 JPY (US $119), respectively. They are slated for launch this month.

Zalman Unveils ZM750-HP Plus PSU

What happens when you send a PC cooling expert such as Zalman into the field of PSUs? You get PSUs with genuine innovation in cooling, which translates to quieter PSUs. Such is the case of the ZM750-HP Plus, an upper-mid range 750W PSU from Zalman. The PSU replaces aluminum cooling plates with copper heat pipes that draw heat away from hot parts (such as FETs), and onto aluminum fin stacks, which are ventilated by a large 140 mm fan. Since a lot of heat is dissipated passively by these large heatsinks, the fan has very little work to do, and so it spins at low speeds, resulting in very quiet operation.

The ZM750-HP Plus features modular cabling, enough to wire out a gaming PC with two graphics cards. The PSU is 80 Plus Silver-rated. It uses a quad 12V rail design, among which two deliver 28A each (for graphics cards), one delivers 25A (motherboard and SATA), one delivers 20A (CPU, dedicated to the EPS connector). It uses a dual forward-switching design, with active PFC. A secondary protection IC governs various safety features such as OCP, OVP, SCP, UVP, and OTP. The ZM750-HP Plus from Zalman, is expected to be priced at US $189,50.

Kuroutoshikou 2.5" Drive Enclosure Pictured

Japanese store Kuroutoshikou listed the GW2.5CL-SUP3, a 2.5" external HDD/SSD enclosure. Measuring 73 x 122 x 135 mm (WxDxH), the enclosure is a rare combination of an internal SATA interface supports SATA 6 Gb/s data-rate, while its external interface is USB 3.0 SuperSpeed, which alleviates interface bottlenecks to a great extant. A unique feature here is an LED-based display that gives you a very rough idea of the free-space left on the installed HDD/SSD. Installing or removing a drive is a tool-free process. On sale now, the GW2.5CL-SUP3 is priced at 3,000 JPY (US $36.5).

ASUS Makes Z9PE-D8 WS 2P-LGA2011 Motherboard Official

ASUS made its workstation-grade Z9PE-D8 WS motherboard official. The board is built for 2P Xeon E5-2600 series processors in the LGA2011 package, is based on the Intel C606 "Patsburg" chipset, and is built in the 30.5 x 33 cm EEB form-factor. Each of the two sockets is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots, supporting quad-channel memory, each. Up to 256 GB of registered DDR3 memory is supported.

Expansion slots include four PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (blue), two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (electrical x8, top two black), and one PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (electrical x4, bottommost black). 4-way SLI and CrossFireX are supported. Storage connectivity includes six SATA 6 Gb/s (two from the PCH, four from two Marvell 9230 chips), and eight SATA 3 Gb/s (all from the PCH). An ASPEED ASMB6 provides basic display and iKVM functions. Realtek ALC898 provides 8-channel HD audio. There are two gigabit Ethernet interfaces, driven by Intel 82574L chips. Gigabyte Unveils X79S-UD5 Workstation Motherboard

At CeBIT, Gigabyte unveiled what many may have overlooked for bearing a strong resemblance to the GA-X79-UD5, the GA-X79S-UD5. This board is designed to be a 1P workstation-grade motherboard, probably with out of the box support for the latest Xeon processors in the LGA2011 package, apart from Core i7 ones. The upper-half of this board is nearly identical to that of the X79-UD5. The LGA2011 CPU is powered by a 14-phase VRM, wired to eight DDR3 DIMM slots (two on either sides), supporting quad-channel memory. There are minor differences (as far as the upper-half is concerned). Tantulum capacitors on the X79-UD5 are replaced with cylindrical solid-state ones on the X79S-UD5, the FrescoLogic-made USB 3.0 controller is replaced with a VLI-made one.

It's the lower half of the X79S-UD5, where all the action is. The expansion slot load-out consists of five long PCI-Express x16 slots. Among these, two are PCI-Express 3.0 x16 capable, one is PCI-Express 3.0 x8 capable (by taking 8 lanes from one of the two x16 links), and two appear to be PCI-Express 2.0 x4. Then there's a legacy PCI slot. The PCH heatsink is identical to the one on the X79-UD5, but what's under it is what counts. Although named "X79"S-UD5, the board is actually based on the Intel C606 "Patsburg", which is an enterprise-grade chipset for Intel's Sandy Bridge-EP platforms. Apart from six SATA ports (2x 6 Gb/s + 4x 3 Gb/s), the C606 PCH provides eight SAS (Serial-attached SCSI) ports, running at 3 Gb/s speeds. The rest of the connectivity is completely identical to that of the X79-UD5.

The drive is available in capacities as high as 4 TB, and provides sequential performance as high as 560 MB/s, with 4K access performance of 100,000 IOPS.

ICY DOCK Announces the DuoSwap MB971SP-B 5.25" Hot Swap 2.5" & 3.5" Drive Caddy

External docking stations are popular because of its flexibility and compatibility. However, because it is for external use, the interface limits the transfer speed of your hard drive while only allowing one to be use at a time. In a standard computer case, there are several 5.25" bays usually reserved for your DVD ROM drive, however, will not naturally fit with your 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives without some assistance. Using the MB971SP-B DuoSwap, you will save precious desktop space by integrating both 3.5" & 2.5" slots into a single 5.25" bay. This gives you the ability to expand and easily go from your external docking station to your computer in just seconds.
