Tariffs Push US Wafer Fab Equipment Costs Up 15% for Domestic Fabs

As the US works to bring more semiconductor manufacturing back home, the machines needed to turn silicon into the world's most advanced processors are becoming pricier and harder to get, thanks to tariffs. Foundries building new fabs report that the specialized equipment they rely on, everything from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography steppers to chemical vapor deposition chambers, carries a roughly 15% premium compared with similar gear sold overseas. Several forces are at play. The raw materials, high‑grade quartz for vacuum enclosures, and exotic metal alloys for precision optics have climbed in price. At the same time, key components like ultra‑accurate motion stages and alignment sensors are in short supply, sometimes stretching lead times for critical subsystems well beyond 18 months. For a fab racing to move from a 7 nm to a 5 nm process, those delays can mean missing tight ramp‑up targets and pushing out product launches.

Smaller chipmakers feel the squeeze the hardest. With fewer orders to negotiate volume discounts, second‑tier foundries may see their capital budgets balloon by 20 percent or more. In response, some are taking a mixed approach, sourcing commoditized tools such as oxidation furnaces and rapid thermal processors from multiple suppliers while reserving single‑vendor deals for high‑stakes systems like EUV scanners. Government support through the CHIPS Act offers a partial safety net, helping to subsidize capital expenditures. Yet even with grants and tax credits, the challenges will remain. Success will hinge on tight coordination between fabs, equipment makers, and policymakers to tame rising costs, shorten delivery schedules, and keep America's chip renaissance on track.

11 bit studios Announces June 13 Launch Date for "The Alters" - Coming to PC & Modern Consoles

What if survival meant facing the versions of yourself you never became? The version of you who chose family over going to college? The version of you who chased down your high school sweetheart and made her your wife or the version of you who lost her? In The Alters, the upcoming sci-fi game from 11 bit studios (makers of This War of Mine and Frostpunk), where survival has never been so personal, the path to salvation begins with a question as old as humanity: What if I had chosen differently? Revealed today as part of the 2025 Triple-I Initiative, 11 bit studios announced that The Alters will launch on June 13, 2025, arriving on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and day one on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.

Stranded on a hostile planet and racing against a deadly sunrise, Jan Dolski's only chance of survival is to create "alters"—alternate versions of himself shaped by roads not taken. Each Jan comes with unique skills, personalities, and memories tied to a different life choice. But they also come with conflict, doubt, and emotional baggage. Managing the mission means managing yourself—literally. Players must maintain a mobile base, make time-critical decisions, build relationships with their Alters, and confront the consequences of their own past lives.

Blue Prince's Lead Developer Explores Indie Project's Puzzle Mechanics

If you have ever found yourself in an unfamiliar room, staring at a closed door and wondering what lies beyond it, then you are already familiar with the mysterious driving force of Blue Prince. Will this door lead to a twisting passageway? A quiet bedroom? Or a grand ballroom? My name is Tonda Ros, an indie developer with a love for atmospheric games, and for the last eight years, I have been working on a game about a large manor and its many mysterious doors. Blue Prince was formed from big ideas from very different worlds. It has elements of mystery, strategy and discovery, merging the world of a first-person puzzle adventure with the drafting mechanics of a tabletop card game. It also launches April 10 as a day one PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title. Other launch platforms include: Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC (Steam).

But how exactly does the game work?
Floor plan drafting: when my own journey began almost a decade ago, I had one simple idea: "Every door is a choice." In a way, these five words sum up the entirety of Blue Prince. The estate of Mount Holly is not an ordinary house. This is a manor of shifting rooms and ever-changing expectations. And in this house, each door you open can lead to one of three different rooms. The choice is up to you. Do you want a storeroom to gain useful tools? A library to search for more clues? Or perhaps simply a long hallway, to grant yourself even more doors to continue your exploration? As you make your decision and open the door, you are instantly met with the room of your choosing.

Capcom To Crack Down on Monster Hunter Arena Quest Cheaters Despite Lack of Anti-Cheat

As part of the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds Title 1 update, Capcom plans to introduce a new Arena Quests mode, a ranked, timed multiplayer mode with a competitive leaderboard and in-game cosmetic prizes. In anticipation of the new game mode, Capcom has issued a stern warning to would-be cheaters, and it will be following that up with punitive measures. According to a post on X and a recent blog post about the new game mode, any confirmed cheaters may face repercussions like removal of rewards, disqualification from further participation in Arena Quests, or even account restriction or outright suspension.

Curiously, Capcom seems to be relying on community reporting for its cheater detection, since Monster Hunter Wilds notably does not feature an anti-cheat system. While this means the AAA game runs well on Linux and the Steam Deck alike, it also makes it more difficult to catch cheating players. It also presents the unfortunate side effect of innocent players being caught in the cross fire. Addressing the latter, Capcom says the following: "Individuals who are mistakenly deemed to have committed a prohibited act will not be compensated later with participation and ranking rewards," and it encourages any players who suspect that they have been teamed up with a cheater to leave the quest immediately and report the offending player.

Intel's High-NA EUV Machines Already Processed 30,000 Wafers, More to Come with 14A Node

Intel has successfully deployed two advanced ASML High-NA Twinscan EXE:5000 EUV lithography systems at its D1 development facility near Hillsboro, Oregon, processing approximately 30,000 wafers in a single quarter. The High-NA EUV systems, each reportedly valued at $380 million, represent a substantial improvement over previous lithography tools, achieving resolution down to 8 nm with a single exposure compared to the 13.5 nm resolution of current Low-NA systems. Early operational data indicates these machines are approximately twice as reliable as previous EUV generations, addressing reliability challenges that previously hampered Intel's manufacturing progress. The ability to accomplish with a single exposure what previously required three exposures and approximately 40 processing steps has been reduced to just "single digit" processing steps.

Intel has historically been an early adopter of high-NA EUV lithography, a much more aggressive strategy than its competitors like TSMC, which manufactures its advanced silicon using low-NA EUV tools. The company plans to utilize these systems for its upcoming 14A chip manufacturing process, though no specific mass production date has been announced. While ASML classifies these Twinscan EXE:5000 systems as pre-production tools not designed for high-volume manufacturing, Intel's extensive wafer processing is more of a test bed. The early adoption provides Intel with valuable development opportunities across various High-NA EUV manufacturing aspects, including photomask glass, pellicles, and specialized chemicals that could establish future industry standards. Intel's current 18A node is utilizing Low-NA lithography tools, where Intel is only exploring High-NA with it for testing, before moving on to 14A high-volume manufacturing with High-NA EUV.

NVIDIA Blackwell RTX and AI Features Leaked by Inno3D

NVIDIA's RTX 5000 series GPU hardware has been leaked repeatedly in the weeks and months leading up to CES 2025, with previous leaks tipping significant updates for the RTX 5070 Ti in the VRAM department. Now, Inno3D is apparently hinting that the RTX 5000 series will also introduce updated machine learning and AI tools to NVIDIA's GPU line-up. An official CES 2025 teaser published by Inno3D, titled "Inno3D At CES 2025, See You In Las Vegas!" makes mention of potential updates to NVIDIA's AI acceleration suite for both gaming and productivity.

The Inno3D teaser specifically points out "Advanced DLSS Technology," "Enhanced Ray Tracing" with new RT cores, "better integration of AI in gaming and content creation," "AI-Enhanced Power Efficiency," AI-powered upscaling tech for content creators, and optimizations for generative AI tasks. All of this sounds like it builds off of previous NVIDIA technology, like RTX Video Super Resolution, although the mention of content creation suggests that it will be more capable than previous efforts, which were seemingly mostly consumer-focussed. Of course, improved RT cores in the new RTX 5000 GPUs is also expected, although it will seemingly be the first time NVIDIA will use AI to enhance power draw, suggesting that the CES announcement will come with new features for the NVIDIA App. The real standout feature, though, are called "Neural Rendering" and "Advanced DLSS," both of which are new nomenclatures. Of course, Advanced DLSS may simply be Inno3D marketing copy, but Neural Rendering suggests that NVIDIA will "Revolutionize how graphics are processed and displayed," which is about as vague as one could be.

Mozilla Rebrands, Reaffirms its Mission To Protect Open Web Despite Advocacy Team Layoffs

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Mozilla's entire advocacy team was caught in a round of layoffs, leading to speculation that Mozilla would be giving up its advocacy entirely, shifting to a more commercial focus. Now, with the announcement of Mozilla's new branding, aside from updating the brand's look, it seems as though the Firefox company wants to reassure users of its software that it is still dedicated to its mission to "keep the internet free, open, and accessible." The new branding strategy includes a new logo, typeface family, new icons, a T. rex mascot, and new colors.

The new branding push from Mozilla sees the brand move an appearance seemingly inspired by both its history and the text-based OS interfaces of the early years of computing. For the rebranding, Mozilla partnered with design firm JKR (Jones Knowles Ritchie), and the new branding features a cutesy DOS-style flag that doubles as a T. rex, hinting to past Mozilla logos. In the announcement of the rebranding, boldly titled "Reclaim the internet: Mozilla's rebrand for the next era of tech," Mozilla emphasizes that the new look is meant to convey the company's intention throughout its whole ecosystem of products. It seems as though Mozilla is trying to remind everyone that it's work towards a more open internet extends beyond just the advocacy team it recently laid off.
