AirLive WL-5400CAM WLAN IP Camera Review

Video Quality

There are a few video qualities you may set within the web interface. I have recorded two videos, one at 320 x 240 and the other at 640 x 480 resolution. There are lower resolutions available as well, but there is no real point in using those unless you are severely limited in bandwidth. The two links below have been recorded with the software IP View SE, which a normal user would also use to record videos "on the fly". Another option to save video is via an FTP server of your choice. In this case the camera sends a 3 FPS video to the server, to avoid any strain on the network. You may set more frames, but it is not recommended unless you have a dedicated wireless network with an FTP server, just for surveillance.

Value & Conclusion

  • The AirLive WL-5400CAM will set you back around $190 US Dollars or 150€. While this may seem a lot, it is well priced for this type of hardware
  • Justified price
  • Very well built
  • Very good video quality
  • Very simple and well organized Setup Wizard
  • Detailed web interface
  • Device can be managed over network
  • Software allows simultaneous control of up to four cameras
  • FTP, local storage and E-Mail upload
  • Antenna can be removed
  • No autofocus
  • Nothing for "fun" home use
  • Camera with built-in microphone costs extra
  • A 2 dbi antenna may not be strong enough
  • Only Fast Ethernet 100 MBit/s
The AirLive WL-5400CAM is a very interesting device for a very specific market. It can be easily set up, so you do not need to worry about being an experienced technician to utilize the device. Judging from the software and hardware features the WL-5400CAM is clearly geared towards businesses looking for a quick, affordable, cable-less and easy way to implement surveillance. The tested model actually lacks a build in microphone, but AirLive offers one with such a feature at a more expensive price point.
Due to the maximum of four viewable cameras, the entire system is aimed at smaller properties which can be covered by that amount of cameras, without the need to set up more than one running system. The web interface may also be used as a promotional tool or for marketing purposes, while it may even reduce your insurance bill if used as a security measure. If you are looking to add a camera to your existing wireless network and need good video quality with no sound, the WL-5400CAM is a great choice.
