Value and Conclusion

  • The Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion keyboard costs $119.99 from the Akko web shop and other approved retailers for either switch option, as of the date of this review.
  • Solid design and typing experience
  • Walnut wood case with themed keycaps
  • Excellent damping of keystrokes
  • Pre-lubed good quality switches and stabilizers
  • 5-pin hot-swappable switch sockets
  • Extensive onboard controls over function and form
  • Software support for fine-tuning
  • Dye-sub PBT keycaps for longevity
  • Plenty of lighting effects to choose from
  • Hybrid wireless connectivity with long battery life
  • Decent accessories included
  • Keycaps are opaque, hard to use in low light
  • Keycap legends are not designed uniformly
  • No tactile or clicky switches available
  • Software could be more optimized
  • The theme/design can be divisive
If I had to sum up the Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion keyboard in a few words, it would be a keyboard with a subjectively cool aesthetic that is best used in daylight or with the room lights on, and the keyboard lights off. There is a lot to like about the keyboard, but it's also going to be divisive in more than just the aesthetics. Akko put itself in a corner with the walnut wood case, which is frankly very well-made and certainly makes you feel this keyboard costs more than the $120 it is asking for. At first glance, you might even be tricked into thinking the keycaps are somehow also made of wood, but of course then logic will prevail as the PBT plastic feel confirms as much. There are a few different themes being employed by Akko for its wooden keyboard lineup, with two on the market already using the same base and just differing in the keycaps. If this Mountain Seclusion theme is not for you, perhaps consider the MU01 Autumn which also sells for the same price and addresses the keycap legends issue I have here. The Mountain Seclusion theme is certainly more artistic though, and it uses different switches for whatever reason.

This version does end up being one of the best keyboards I've used in terms of typing sound and experience, and a lot of this has to do with the various materials chosen in addition to the extensive damping inside. You may have heard of adjectives used by keyboard enthusiasts, including thocky, creamy, marble-like sound and I would put this as a good example for those descriptors. The hybrid wireless connectivity, software support, and hot-swappable switches are nice features to have too. I would have liked Akko to offer more stock switch options though, especially given how the brand boasts of a massive 1st-party switch lineup anyway. It's not a keyboard that will please everyone, but is a decent option at the asking price and worthy of consideration to anyone who likes this style and the wood case. I am personally conflicted just enough to not outright award it a recommendation though, especially given the feature set can be had for less from others for less while being more functional too.
