XBMC Application

According to Asustor, Boxee is available for use on the 6 Series, while XBMC (beta) is available for use on the 3 Series, which is fine with us since we prefer XBMC.

Installing XBMC turns this NAS into a fully featured media player. Since Asustor has equipped its 3 Series with an HDMI port, you can connect the NAS to any HDMI-ready monitor or TV and reproduce all multimedia content off the NAS using XBMC. However, there are some limitations due to issues with Intel's graphics drivers. Intel is currently working to resolve those issues, though no ETA has been given. All current limitations are listed below:
  • Blu-ray ISO navigation is not supported yet
  • DTS/Dolby digital sound is unavailable
Once you install XBMC, you can control the NAS through the following methods:
  1. ASUSTOR Remote
  2. USB keyboard and mouse
  3. Official XBMC Remote App (iOS & Android):
We tried all of the above and all worked flawlessly.

We played ultra-high bitrate files with XBMC, and the AS-302T's CPU didn't have the slightest problem handling them. The XBMC interface was also generally fast, without any hitches or lag.

XBMC is probably the best media player available, and we think Asustor should also pick it over Boxee, which Samsung recently bought, for their higher-end models.

The remote control Asustor provided me with made controlling XBMC a breeze, and we liked its small dimensions a lot. It only has the essential buttons, which won't have you run into any problem as you play your favorite multimedia content off the NAS.
