Brainwavz B200 In-ears Review

Value & Conclusion »

Performance

Brainwavz has made a lot of in-ears over the years, and they have usually been bass focused. However, the B200 is different in this regard as the bass has been brought down to a more neutral level.

Its bass extension is still really good, which is as you would expect from a good set of in-ears, but it is not as powerful as on previous in-ears from them. Bass heads might miss a little 80 Hz bump for more presence and punch, but for most, that is probably a good thing. The bass is not absent in any way, it just does not take center position anymore.

If the bass had 1-2 dB more from 100 Hz downward, I think it would be more of a crowd pleaser, where the current tuning is more for the detail-oriented audiophile. Of course, the deficit is easily corrected with an equalizer.

With the lowered bass response and no 80 Hz bump, the midrange is completely uncolored. The B200's midrange is neutral, which helps with bringing out the finer details in the music, and together with a well extended and quite smooth treble response, there is a nice and airy sound without any harshness as the upper midrange is flatish as well.

People who enjoy the HiFiMAN RE-400's signature will absolutely adore the B200's tuning, which, coupled with its better fit and ergonomics, makes it a no-brainer. Ergonomics on the new B-series from Brainwavz is near perfect. The new thin memory wire earhooks actually work, which, coupled with the Westone UM-type shell design, make the B200 extremely comfortable. The cable is not the least microphonic on the market, but it is close.
