Final Thoughts and Conclusion

  • The Colorful C.B360M-HD Deluxe V20 is available for US$85.00
  • Excellent fit and finish
  • Clean, appealing aesthetic
  • Very good "out-of-box" performance
  • Well laid out
  • No USB Type-C
  • Only two fan headers
  • Limited fan control
  • No RGB lighting
The Colorful C.B360M-HD Deluxe V20 is a solid board that matched and in some cases even beat previously tested Z370 boards. However, this board is not without flaws. First and foremost is that two fan connectors just are not enough, not even for Micro-ATX. Furthermore, only offering fan control from within the BIOS, limited fan control at that, is a pretty big drawback for a modern motherboard. It can be argued that on a small form factor budget board extensive fan control and numerous fan headers are not necessary. I strongly disagree and feel that on smaller builds adaptive fan control is more important as there will be fewer fans and less space in total, which makes running them at an optimal speed all the more efficient, especially in terms of noise and temperatures.

Now that USB 3.1 Gen2 is included on the B360 chipset, I believe the omission of USB Type-C to be unacceptable. While Type-A ports can take full advantage of USB 3.1 Gen. 2 speeds, the Type-C standard has been around long enough for it to be included on every board. I also feel that the admission of RGB lighting, while not a huge deal for most people, may be a turn off for some, especially since it shouldn't cost the manufacturer much to add when there is already LED lighting on the board.

The VRMs on this board do run pretty hot at over 100 degrees Celsius on my test bench. However, this did not seem to have an affect on benchmarking. The Colorful C.B360M-HD Deluxe V20 scored very well in many of the 3-D benchmarks, and regular PC loads should not be as demanding as synthetic loads are. There was noticeable throttling in a few benchmarks, most notably wPrime, compared to Z370 boards. How much of that is due to the power phase design on this board and the cooling and how much of it is the B360 chipset is yet to be figured out. In most uses, especially gaming applications, the Colorful C.B360M-HD Deluxe V20 is on par with the Z370 boards I have tested.

The fit and finish of the Colorful C.B360M-HD Deluxe V20 are excellent, and its performance is impressive. This board, despite its limitations, is certainly a worthy budget solution for a Coffee Lake build.
