A Look Inside

Before reading this page we strongly suggest to take a look at this article, which will help you understand much better the internals description of the PSU.


The OEM of the PSU is Seasonic, again! This is the fourth, almost in a row, review that we encounter a made by Seasonic PSU. It seems that either this OEM is very popular or we are very lucky with our samples! Unlike the previous Seasonic platforms we reviewed this one utilizes more recent technology, since it uses DC-DC converters for the minor rails generation. What trouble us, not so much is the truth, was that many components on the main PCB were crooked or were leaning (e.g. the secondary heatsink, the bridge rectifiers heatsink, several capacitors etc.) However as long as this doesn't affect the PSU's proper operation is only an aesthetics problem, of a perfectionist reviewer.


The first stage of the EMI/transient filter is housed on a small PCB right after the AC receptacle. It has one X, four Y capacitors and one coil. The second stage on the main PCB is consisted of an MOV, one X and two Y capacitors and two coils.


There are two parallel bridge rectifiers (GBU806) cooled passively by a heatsink. In the APFC stage we find two mosfets (SPP24N60C3) and the boost diode. The smoothing capacitors are two Rubycons connected in parallel. Both are rated to 105 °C, 400V and the smaller one has 220μF capacitance while the bigger one has 330μF. So in total they have 550μF capacitance. As main switches two SPA20N60C3 are used.


There are two daughter-boards. The first (on the left) houses the protections integrated circuit, an PS223 and the other the PFC/PWM combo controller, a Champion CM6802. Between the two daughter-boards the leaning, like Pizza's tower, capacitor (Rubycon ZLH, 105 °C) is used for the 5VSB filtering. The rectification of the 5VSB handles an SBR10U45 which resides on the solder side of the main PCB.


In the secondary side passive design is used for the generation of +12V and five 30A50CT Schottky Barrier Rectifiers (SBRs) handle the job. Afterwards, the minor rails are generated from +12V through two DC-DC converters that are housed on the same PCB. All filtering capacitors in the secondary side are provided by Nippon Chemi-Con and are rated to 105 °C.


Soldering quality on the main PCB is not the best we have seen and especially from Seasonic. We noticed several sloppy joints and some component leads are too long.


The fan is provided by Yate Loon Electronics and its model number is D14BH-12. It's rated for 0.7A, 12V.
