Value and Conclusion

  • The Cougar Immersa Pro is available online for $80.
  • Well-balanced sound signature
  • Excellent build quality
  • Huge ear cups and dual-headband design make it comfortable
  • Pleasant aesthetics
  • Practical, retractable microphone
  • Driver offers microphone-monitoring functionality
  • Could do with a better microphone
  • Volume dial should be easier to rotate
  • Ears get warm after several hours of use
  • Poor 7.1 surround sound
The $80 Cougar Immersa Pro is a nice step up from the cheaper $50 Immersa. It sports the very same design and build quality, but also comes with its own USB sound card, a bit of RGB action (worry not, the RGB LEDs can be turned off), and - most importantly - a pair of larger speaker drivers that are tuned much differently.

Instead of mainly focusing on an earth-shattering bass, this time around, Cougar created an acoustically well-rounded headset that still offers plenty of depth and rumble in the lowest part of the audio spectrum, but proves to be quite capable in the mid- and high-range as well. Thanks to that, it fares much better than the original Immersa in terms of spatial positioning and versatility, both in terms of the games you play and the music genres you prefer. Whatever you do, stick with stereo mode; the 7.1 surround sound is just bad.

The retractable microphone isn't nearly as good as the rest of the headset in terms of sound quality. You can use it for Discord, TeamSpeak, Skype, and other voice chatting apps with no issues, but I don't consider it good enough for Twitch and YouTube streaming because it lacks the warmth for that. The volume dial, located on the right ear cup, should also have a more refined range of motion. On the other hand, it does its job properly, so there's no point in complaining too much.

This is a very good gaming headset. Competing USB headsets with comparable sound quality go for $100 or more, so Cougar once again managed to put together a device that offers more than it costs. With that in mind, the Immersa Pro successfully continues the legacy of the original Immersa, and that's all we had hoped for.
