Dead Space (2023) is a reboot of the cult-classic survival horror game that shaped the genre like very few titles have. It is the 26th Century, humans are mining the stars, one such planetary mining vessel, the gargantuan USG Ishimura, sends a distress call by its chief medical officer, that's picked up by an engineering vessel, the USS Kellion, you are its engineer and the game's protagonist, Issac Clarke, along with a skeletal crew. You arrive on the Ishimura to find that it's been overrun by horrific creatures that have been mutated from human corpses, called the necromorphs. You must make your way through the ship in order to find the chief medical officer—who's also your girlfriend—and get off the ship. Along the way, you encounter the main antagonist, a mad scientist that's been transforming the crew into these monsters.
The Dead Space reboot has been in development through the past 3-odd years, with the game being based on the latest version of the Frostbite engine from EA-DICE, with many of the new technologies featured in other titles, such as "Battlefield 2042," including real time ray tracing, variable rate shading and more. It also features much of the content that was removed from the original game due to technical constraints. Since this is a story/narrative-driven game that's identical in plot to the original, many of the voice-actors and character models reprise their roles. Dead Space can be fairly taxing on your machine, and will reward fast hardware with some jaw-dropping visuals as you'll see in the next page. This one is truly a next-gen title.
