Microsoft Introduces Copilot for Gaming

This morning on The Official Xbox Podcast, Xbox Corporate Vice President of Gaming AI, Fatima Kardar joined Vice President of Next Generation, Jason Ronald to reveal exciting AI-powered updates that are coming directly to Xbox players, to help you save time, find new games you're likely to love, or even to help ease you back into a game you may have stepped away from.

Copilot for Gaming Asset
On the podcast, Kardar introduced Copilot for Gaming, which Xbox Insiders can get an early preview of on mobile soon. This AI-driven sidekick is designed to be your personalized gaming companion, helping you get to your favorite games faster, coaching you to improve your skills, and connecting you better with your friends and communities. Copilot for Gaming will be there when you need it but out of the way if you don't.
"Gaming is the only form of entertainment where you can get stuck," said Kardar on the podcast. "So that's where you want something to show up to say, let's help you get past that."

Reading about it is one thing, seeing it in action is another, so we encourage you to watch the episode to see some prototypes of Copilot for Gaming here:

Copilot for Gaming is built on three principles: capability, adaptability, and personalization. It is designed to assist players in various ways, from personalized game recommendations and seamless game setup, to helpful coaching and maintaining connections with friends. Kardar emphasized that the player remains in control, deciding how and when to interact with the Copilot, ensuring that it enhances rather than disrupts the gaming experience.

One of the primary problems Kardar highlighted that Copilot for Gaming aims to solve for is time management; to help players spend less time on tasks (searching, downloading, updating) and more time on what they love - playing games: "All of it is with one goal: to help you to get to play first." Whether it's connecting players with games they're likely to enjoy or reminding you where you left off on an old favorite, Copilot for Gaming is set to make gaming with Xbox more seamless and personalized.

Copilot for Gaming Asset
One particularly exciting area which Kardar demonstrated on the podcast is a future feature of Copilot for Gaming: in-game assistance. In example scenarios, players were presented using natural language, where Copilot was able to provide situation-specific advice to assist players in overcoming challenges and improving their gameplay.

"It's not just about AI showing up to help you, it's about AI showing up at the right moment," Kardar elaborated. "We really have to think about the experience we've built, it cannot be intrusive."

That's why engaging with features like this will be in the control of the player, when - and if - they choose. Player feedback is crucial in this journey; through the Xbox Insider Program, players will soon be able to try it and provide feedback to help shape the product direction—beginning first on mobile and gradually expanding across devices. This collaborative approach ensures that the AI solutions developed are truly aligned with player needs and preferences and don't disrupt your flow. You can find out more about joining Xbox Insider Program here.

Xbox Play Anywhere
Also on this episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Jason Ronald shared that over 1,000 titles are now supporting Xbox Play Anywhere. When players purchase an Xbox Play Anywhere game, you can enjoy it on Xbox and Windows 10/11 PCs at no additional cost, bringing your saves, progress, achievements, with you across devices. This flexibility holds obvious value for players, but Ronald also shared some player metrics showing Xbox Play Anywhere's value for developers as well.

"When we look at data for titles that are Xbox Play Anywhere enabled, these titles get 20% more gameplay because it's more flexible, because I can play on the go," said Ronald.

It has the audacity to ask back!

No, don't pull up a quick strategy guide, just answer the damn question! :banghead:

Where has learning through experimenting and challenging one's creativity gone? :(

Oh hell no. If it can't be bothered to answer questions it probably can't scream slurs at me like the usual chat. It is actually useless garbage.

Figuring out how to solve things in games is a big part of the fun, with a chatbot (assuming it works) so close at hand, the temptation to just ask is definitely there.
I personally really would not want such a thing near me while gaming, if anything it rewards bad game design, just ask the chatbot, instead of the game giving you the proper guidance.

Not to mention, there's no point making the game challenging in any way, because you can always just ask the chatbot instead of making an effort to figure things out for yourself.

Instant gratification and rewarding stupidity. Participation medal for everyone - that's what this is.

Does it also ask you to jump off a cliff, if it can't find answers/strategies :slap:

Apparently some people don't find mudding / mud bogging entertaining.

Well, that's a point of view I can also relate to.

Although personally, I prefer trying different solutions before giving into my urges to look for a guide, I'm afraid this isn't how the new generation is being brought up. Kids these days have everything served on a silver platter from day one. This new AI tool will only make them even more stupid.

What irks me the absolute most is that these things are utterly tone policed and guardrailed. I can't even swear to it and it's going to censor itself. It'll be completely worthless for games with a mature thematic.

Well you can't blame just the kids for that ~ today's parents spend 2-5x as much time on their phones/hobbies or work than on their kids! And when it comes to punishment, oh it'll break the kids :shadedshu:

I'm not in favor of going bonkers when it comes to punishing/correcting kids but parents these days just treat them with way too much of "kid" gloves nearly all the time! Maybe save more time for your kids.

Oh I do blame parents 100%! Most of them are utter shite at what they're doing these days. And society for making both parents have to work full-time to make a living, and have no time for their kids.

To the same place as game design requiring you to use more than a single brain cell. Was watching a streamer play through the original Half-Life and they made a comment that the "puzzles" in that game would never make the cut in this day and age, and I realised to my horror that they are exactly right.

Part of the joy of attaining anything in life is working for it, because at the end of the day it makes success that much sweeter. Removing that needed effort removes the joy and thus further disincentivises making effort, it's a vicious circle. A generation of kids incapable of feeling anything is being raised.

I put a "love" emoji at your post because I agree with every single character that you wrote, but I don't love it one bit. I don't love the inhuman world we're creating in the name of technological progress and ease.

HyderzWould this be considered as a bloatware?
I mean, arguably like 70-80% of the default modern consumer Windows install can be easily classified as bloatware. This just adds onto the ever-growing pile, unfortunately.

Because Nadella is a moron who's thrown billions of dollars into the OpenAI pit and is finally starting to realise that he's never getting it back. When the LLM bubble pops - something that's going to happen shortly (note how few advancements have been announced recently) - MS is going to be left carrying that can, and shareholders are going to crucify Nadella for it. He's trying to compensate by shoving ChatGPT into everything; let's see how that works out for him.
