Value and Conclusion

  • Nice all-rounder set for the money
  • Especially strong for rock, metal, Asian pop, and jazz
  • Powerful sub-bass for EDM lovers too
  • Forward and engaging vocals, works well for general media consumption also
  • Good heft added to the notes in the lows and mids
  • Excellent separation and layering
  • Precise imaging with a decent soundstage
  • Controlled treble without being fatiguing or annoying in the upper treble
  • Lightweight while still being durable
  • Comfortable with a secure fit for me
  • Nice carry/storage case included
  • Bass could be more textured
  • Not the most resolving set in this price range
  • Mid-treble energy can be divisive
  • Large nozzle can be uncomfortable
  • Stock cable is not competitive in this price range, and more ear tips would be nice too
The TERRA is Lime Ears' latest release, and arguably one of its best irrespective of price. I remember talking to Emil in person about the TERRA when I first tried the set at an audio show, basically telling him this might have made some of his more expensive sets redundant. He just smiled—or so I assume anyway, given his thick mustache was hiding things—and said "Good, now more people can try Lime Ears IEMs and feel happy." This is not a person who cares purely about what makes him more money, he's instead happier to discuss indie bands, whether ear tips and cables make a big difference to the sound from IEMs, and then taking a hike in the Polish mountains to get inspiration for what's to come next. I suspect the TERRA was the result of one such excursion, especially given its color scheme and design that is nature-inspired. The sound is natural too, albeit on the colored side and not dry if you were worried. Indeed, the TERRA is tuned quite bold with plentiful bass that doesn't get boomy or muddy thanks to its clean transition to the mids and a sub-bass emphasis.

The warmer sound also lends favorably towards a more organic presentation, especially for vocals but most instruments too. I also appreciate the ear gain being forward to help balance the bass, and the controlled upper treble to have good extension without too much air to risk being fatiguing or annoying is a testament to the tuning Lime Ears is able to put out here despite using a super tweeter BA driver in the nozzle itself! So it's safe to say then that the TERRA is a good all-rounder, although not necessarily a set for everyone. The $1200 pricing is higher than what many can afford of course, although for once those in Europe seem to get a better deal than the USA. There are several excellent IEMs in this price range, most of which offer different tonalities that will work better for some music genres than others. The TERRA too excels with some more than others, albeit I would not say it's necessarily bad at something. The amount of bass provided may be too much for some people, and indeed I prefer less bass, yet it does work here. Likewise, the mid-treble can be hot sounding if you are sensitive to this region, and yet the upper mids and lower treble being forward also helps keep things under control.

This is not a set for analytical listening as much as it is for fun, given the TERRA manages to pump out notes with good weight behind them. The bass quality could be better in my opinion, and I do feel it's not as detailed as some others. Then there's the part where the cable simply does not feel like it belongs with a €1099 set of IEMs, and here I will put some blame on Effect Audio. I also wish we got more ear tips in the box, or at least a different set that is more amenable to deeper insertion without risking seal breakage/poor isolation for some. One could argue most people who can afford the Lime Ears TERRA are likely to already have a preferred aftermarket cable and ear tips, but I will still judge the overall product. Lime Ears could also help people by providing more information about the product, but I suppose this is part of the quirkiness that makes Lime Ears what it is. I feel fairly confident that most people who listen to the TERRA will be left happy, and I've already seen many audiophiles—who purchase far more expensive IEMs on a whim—leave content with their time listening to the TERRA too. This is an exciting product that hangs with its peers and has the potential to be even better with some tweaks beyond the IEMs itself, so I'll certainly recommend people go out of their way to try the set and see whether this is a good fit for them.
