Software
To gain the full benefit of the TripleHead2Go Digital you need to install the PowerDesk-SE software. This application gives you the possibilty to control all three output displays and their resolution among other things. Installing the software does not require any special user interaction. You do however need to restart the PC after the setup has completed.
After the reboot you will see a new icon in the system tray. The little "M" gives you access to the PowerDesk-SE software. While there are many different menu items here, you can generally reach all of these functions by opening the "Matrox GXM Setup" and going from there.
PowerDesk-SE
The main screen of the PowerDesk-SE shows you at what resolution you are currently running at, as well as the Hz and color depth. It also recognizes the connected displays, as they are DVI. For this review we will be using three BenQ G2200W monitors. These feature the 1680 x 1050 resolution - the maximum the GXM module is capable of. To reach such a resolution you will need to flash the TripleHead2Go Digital with the latest firmware. For more information,
check out this page.
In the "Edit Mode List..." window, you may choose what resolution can be selected. This should make it easier to find the right resolution, as there are many different ones available. The TripleHead2Go Digital may also be used with a single monitor or in a dual screen configuration. The latter mode mimics that of the DualHead2Go Digital.
Another interesting part is the "Troubleshooting Information" window. It does not only list the current software and firmware version, but also gives you the ability to reset the device to factory settings and shows what graphic hardware and drivers you are using.
TripleHead2Go Surround Gaming Utility
Installing the Surroung Gaming Utility (SGU) is done quickly and does not require a reboot. After the installation is finished the application opens up right away.
The application has not changed much from the past. Each update simply includes support for more and more games. The utility shows the entire list to the left of the window. You may seach the list by typing in the name of the game in the bottom text field. Matrox has colored games with native support blue. These are all the games, that should work with the TripleHead2Go right out of the box and do not require any intervention from the SGU application. All games listed in grey require a change in starting parameters or a modification in the configuration file to properly support surround gaming. Most of these "grey" games however will not work beyond a resolution of 3x 1240 x 1024. Needless to say, most modern games work very well with the unit.
