Mionix Castor Review

Closer Examination

The Castor is one of the smaller rodents in the Mionix family. Both the Naos and the Avior are noticeably bigger in terms of dimensions and volume. The Castor does feel smaller in your hands, but not by as much as its dimensions might suggest. In my medium-to-large hands, the Castor does feel a little on the small side, but I am sure a lot of people who found the Naos too bulky would feel right at home on the Castor. Despite being a heavily contoured right-handed design, the ergonomics are surprisingly unforced. You can grip the mouse in multiple ways without overstraining your hands, which is a great feat. Personally, the size of the mouse is just 5mm too small in all directions, but here, your mileage may vary.

The bottom of the mouse is where the magic happens for the Castor. The new 10000 DPI sensor is simply a piece of art. Not only does it outshine most other sensors on the market in terms of raw numbers, but it is also completely acceleration free, which is pretty unheard of when talking about 4000+ DPI. The PMW-3310 is a PixArt design based on the Avago lens and sensor. It boasts extreme performance figures of 215 IPS with a maximum of 10000 DPI. This combination makes it the best choice for pretty much any gamer right now. Only people who rely on desk surfaces might find the performance lacking as IR LED optical sensors are more surface sensitive than their laser counter parts.

The resemblance is clear when you place the Castor next to the Avior. The design language is largely carried over, and minor details are tweaked.

Like we saw on previous Mionix mice, the scroll area is uncluttered and features a spare button that is by default used to select profiles.

Mionix's mice are all rubber-coated and for the Castor, Mionix added a thick rubber patch for your thumb. This works really well and makes it surprisingly comfortable to grip in even the heat of a match.
