Value and Conclusion

  • The Mushkin Chronos 240 GB is available online for $165.
  • Low cost per GB
  • Good performance per Dollar
  • Supports TRIM
  • 3 -year warranty
  • Low performance vs. other SSDs
Based on our performance results, it is clear that the Mushkin Chronos 240 GB will not set any performance records. It is clearly held back by the fact that only four flash chips are installed on the PCB. We usually see 16 chips working together at the same time, which provides a higher number of flash channels. The more channels are available for a flash controller to use at the same time, the more data can be pumped through it, which is just like on a multi-lane highway.
While synthetic performance numbers look pretty bad, actual real-life performance is surprisingly good. On average, we see performance that is 25% lower than today's highest-end SSDs, like the Samsung 840 Pro or OCZ Vector. 25% might sound like a lot, but it is not, especially if upgrading from a mechanical hard drive that is many times slower.

The real highlight of the Chronos is its outstanding price. The 240 GB version can be yours for just $165, which turns into a price per Gigabyte of below 70 cents, making it one of the most affordable SSDs on the market right now. If you are looking for a bit more performance, sub-$200 drives, like higher-end SandForce drives or the Corsair Neutron GTX, are up to the task without breaking the bank.
