QNAP TS-451 Review

Ram Upgrade

As we already mentioned, QNAP sent us a 4 GB SO-DIMM after we told them we couldn't test the Virtualization Station with the unit we had on hand.

The 4 GB SO-DIMM came in a nice blue box and is provided by Apacer. However, at $135 this product is very expensive, and we strongly advise QNAP to lower its price immediately. If you need to upgrade your TS-451's RAM total, you had better search for a compatible SO-DIMM that costs much less, although not every SO-DIMM will be compatible.

With 4 GB of RAM, mini-Linux VM had no problem starting up.

We created a full Windows 7 x64 installation to check on how snappy the VM would be. As you will notice by the provided screenshots, setting up a new VM is a piece of cake.

The Windows installation itself was a breeze.

After a while, we had the VM with Windows up and running. While performance wasn't that great, it will suffice for some basic tasks. You shouldn't expect too much from a Celeron CPU, after all. The console's controls were a bit laggy, so you had better use the remote control since its response was considerably snappier.
