Value and Conclusion

  • Scythe offers the Katana Cu for about $35, at the time of this writing some retailers are even selling it for $29.95.
  • Fan controller included
  • Very quiet on the low setting
  • Good cooling performance
  • Wide compatibility
  • Fan can be replaced
  • Fan controller might be a bit chunky in small form factor cases
  • Installation a bit complex
The Scythe Katana Cu is a great allround cooler. It supports pretty much every Socket, except for AM2 which was not around when the cooler was released.
Having an integrated fan speed controller is a very nice addon. Using it you can bring down the fan noise to a third of the normal noise, while only losing about 3°C of cooling performance under load. Truly impressive. Since the fan controller is part of the fan you could cannibalize the 92mm fan for use as speed controlled case fan as well.
Pretty much the only weak point of this cooler is the installation. First time users should carefully read the instruction manual and follow it. An installation like the Scythe Samurai Z would have been easier to do.
Overall this is an excellent cooler, at a fair price, which I can recommend for all supported platforms.
