A Closer Look - Outside
Once unpacked, the SilverStone LD03-AF makes quite the elaborate first impression, which was to be expected as it is based on the original LD03. While it is a compact ITX chassis, it is slightly larger than some, which results in better thermal performance and general compatibility. Its intricate design with uniquely shaped glass panels and non-symmetric angles will make it the center of attention of any room you put it in, be it the office or the living room. In other words, the LD03-AF is not meant to be hidden away under a desk or cabinet.
If you want to know which side is the front, simply look for the SilverStone logo on the bottom edge. A heavily tinted glass panel means you will be able to catch a few glimpses of the hardware inside once the system is assembled. In the rear, you are greeted by a somewhat simple steel back with a detachable dust filter where the SFX PSU will draw in fresh air. There is also an opening in the top cover, so you may route cables out the back nicely.
Both sides of the LD03-AF are shaped the same way and constructed out of tinted glass. This means you are able to peek into the system from three sides if you like. You will also find the most notable improvement over the original here in a dust-filter-protected glass cutout for the GPU side. Cutting a hole into the glass is always a risky manufacturing process as it increases the risk of the panel shattering as it is done, or becoming too fragile for everyday use. However, the one employed on the LD03-AF feels very sturdy and robust.
On top is a fairly bulky top cover, and for good reason as it makes routing all the system connectors out the back easy, which in turn does not disturb the overall look of the chassis. The I/O consists of one USB 3.0, one USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C, and the usual audio connectors. Once the top cover is pulled off, you can clearly see where and how the motherboard will be positioned internally.
Tipping the LD03-AF over, there is another removable dust filter on the bottom of the chassis. This means all intake areas are protected from dirt and grime. Unlike the original, the bottom fan is now one of SilverStone's signature Air Penetrator units for improved thermal performance.
