Sonos is the biggest name in the world of multiroom speaker systems, and the Five is the company's most powerful wireless speaker currently on offer. By "most powerful," Sonos primarily refers to the maximum achievable volume delivered by the six Class D amplifiers driving the three tweeters and three mid-woofers found behind the Five's mesh grille. The Five is no different from other speakers offered by Sonos in terms of other features. In other words, you're getting a speaker that easily connects to your home network (wired or wirelessly) and seamlessly integrates with every other Sonos speaker you might own through the Sonos S2 app. Of course, nothing stops you from using the Five as the only Sonos speaker in your home.
Like other Sonos speakers, the Five supports AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect. Various music, internet radio, and podcast streaming services are accessible through the Sonos S2 app, including Apple Music (no other competitor offers it), Spotify (should you not want to use it through the official app), YouTube Music, Tidal, Deezer, TuneIn, Amazon Music, Qobuz, and many others. The speaker also has a 3.5-millimeter line input. You can use it to connect a turntable or any other analog external sound source. Although the Five is mainly controlled through the aforementioned S2 app, it also has touch controls, which can be used to adjust the volume, play and pause whatever is playing, and quickly create a group with other Sonos speakers found nearby. The Five is supposed to be positioned horizontally, but if you have two of them and want to use them as a stereo pair, you have to orient them vertically. By doing so, you're turning them into two separate mono channels. Sonos considers a pair of Fives in stereo mode as their best music listening system, although such luxury will cost you a pretty penny. A single Sonos Five is currently priced at $550/€600.
