Closer examination

Well, for starters this headset feels very sturdy. The plastic is really thick and has a nice finish compared to some of the other headsets on the market. One of the things that make the SteelSound 5H v2 stand out from the competition is the amount of foam on the ear cups and headband. This makes the headset extremely comfortable to wear, even when using it over an extend period of time. Another unique feature of the SteelSound 5H series is the pullout microphone, which basically means that it can be hidden inside the headset when you aren't using it.



As with the old version, the new one can also be dismantled for safe transportation. This makes the headset ideal if you are an avid LAN goer.
Another exciting feature is that the microphone not only is a fully retractable design, but it can also be adjusted audio-sensitivity-wise on the cord controller. This is a really handy feature if you're at a LAN, because you can filter out background noise just by the flick of a button.



The cord controller is really small and handy. It's made out of the same durable plastic as the rest of the headset and it has a metal clip on the back, that's really nice if you want to use the headset as an ordinary pair of headphones for e.g. an MP3-player. The controller gives you three options for the microphone: High, Low, off. If you set it on high the microphone picks up everything, if you set it on low you have to make more noise in order for the microphone to transmit. As with any headset on the market the controller also sports volume control.



Here you can see the 5H v2 dismantled, the parts are connected via some gold plated connectors. This construction works great in the sense that the headset is easy to dismantle. What I'm worrying about is just how durable these connectors are because when they start to fail the headset will be useless.

One of the neat features of the SteelSound 5H v2 is the cable management. The cord attached to the headset itself is quite short, so if you have your PC on your desk you don't have to look at 3 feet of wire just laying there on your desk serving no purpose. Instead of making the cord long SteelSound provides a cord extension for those users how have their PC sitting on the floor.
