Exterior
Most of the server's front consists of disk trays. There is also a front USB door, at the bottom right corner.
The NAS firmly sits on four plastic feet. There is a small door for access to both RAM slots here, which makes upgrading the memory a breeze.
Around the back, a pair of 120 mm fans are responsible for keeping internal temperatures low. While the SoC has a low TDP, which keeps its thermal load low, the hard drives can get quite hot and require the increased cooling capacity. All the I/O ports are here, including USB, SATA, and four Gigabit Ethernet ports.
We removed the trays to take a look at the internals.
This is the SATA expansion card that can hold up to eight drives.
Synology was kind enough to ship the NAS with a pair of Seagate IronWolf disks; however, we will use ours to produce test results that are comparable to our previous NAS reviews.
