Initial Setup & Software

The DiskStation setup wizard starts once you put the provided software disc into an optical drive. It offers a menu with interesting options. You had better read the Quick Installation Guide, which will help you with the installation of the NAS, the HDDs etc, if you don't have any experience with NAS devices. Afterwards, install the Synology Assistant: it will guide you through the installation of the operating system on the disk(s) that you installed into the NAS.


The Synology Assistant program, once installed, will find the NAS in your network, identify its model number and its serial number and will, if an operating system hasn't been installed yet, guide you through the installation process. It is highly preferable to download the latest version the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system from Synology's FTP if you have access to the internet instead of procuring and using a hard copy of DSM on a disc. Downloading the operating system will make sure that your install is up-to-date. You can directly connect to the NAS through the Synology Assistant to set up the DS213+'s parameters. You also have the ability to check on its resources, upload some photos, or check the printers that are attached to it.


These are the steps you have to follow in order to install the DSM operating system on the DS213+. As you can see, the whole process is fully automated and really easy to follow. It doesn't take long to complete.

Software

The Data Replicator 3 software can be found on the installation disc. It allows you to backup and restore your files easily and quickly.


The Synology Cloud Station software can be downloaded directly from Synology's download center. It allows you to sync files up between your NAS and your workstation, or client PCs.
