DiskStation Manager 4.1 Tour Part#1

DSM 4.1 is the latest version and has several new features compared to the older DSM 4.0 including speed limit and traffic control, an enhanced syslog server, an advanced mail server, and a video station application, which all movie fans will highly appreciate. The cloud station in DSM 4.1, as we already stated, also supports two shared folders in sync, encrypted transmission, and HTTPS. More information about DSM 4.1 can be found here.

The task bar is located on the top side, and in the top-left corner resides the equivalent to the Windows "Start Menu" button, which opens a window with your most popular programs/applications while also giving you access to two buttons for restarting and shutting down the NAS server. On the right side of the interface are some customizable widgets that provide useful information about the NAS and give an easy way to access popular functions like the resource monitor, scheduled backup, system logs etc. You have the option to hide the widgets if you find them annoying.

The control panel provides access to all settings and functions of the NAS. All choices are categorized into four main categories: file sharing and privileges, network services, system, and application settings. The icons used are quite self-explanatory and won't confuse you.

You can create new users and groups and assign access permissions to them through the "User" and "Group" choice. You should enable the guest account, which is deactivated by default, if you want the NAS to be accessible to anyone.

The NAS is equipped with a firewall through which you can create various rules to block unauthorized access.

The power-settings icon allows you to adjust the power recovery settings, set the fan's speed-mode, tamper with the beep control, enable UPS support if your UPS can be controlled through the network, create an operational schedule for the NAS, and, finally, adjust HDD hibernation modes. You can also set system-hibernation mode to start 60 seconds after HDD hibernation is triggered.

The network panel allows you set the NAS name on the network, setup the network interface, the DNS server, and the default gateway. You can also enable or disable Jumbo frames and enable VLAN in the network-interface tab. Remember that Jumbo frames should be supported by the switch connected to the NAS. The frame size on the client PCs should also be set accordingly. You also have the ability to allow the IPv6 protocol to tunnel over the existing IPv4 network structure through the Tunnel tab.

You can configure various settings of the DSM operating system through these options.
