Storage & RAID Management

The Disk Information tab allows you to check on all installed disks, see the S.M.A.R.T information, and perform a bad-block scan. You can also set the time after which a disk deactivates here. Thecus should make smaller time periods available since the shortest unit you can pick is 30 minutes. All attached external disks will also be displayed on this page.

The RAID Management tab displays all existing RAID volumes and allows you to create a new one. You can also perform a few operations to existing ones, including the expansion of volumes or the setting of a global hot spare. Put a tick into the Quick Raid box in Step #3 if you want to create a new RAID array fast by skipping the bad-block scan, a time-consuming but sometimes necessary procedure. Doing so will speed things up considerably.

You have to connect a USB flash drive to the NAS if you want to encrypt a volume.

Removing a RAID array is quick and easy. However, be careful not to lose any valuable data in the process.

You will use the Shared Folder menu often because it allows for the creation and configuration of shared folders. Simply declare a folder public if you want it to be accessible to everyone.

You can expand this NAS sever's available storage space by using the stackable function. Exploit this function to expand its capacity by using stack-target volumes at different network locations.

The iSCSI tab allows you to allocate space to an iSCSI target, or create a new one.

Clone or wipe an installed disk in the Storage Menu. Depending on the situation, these two options can prove quite useful.

System Management

The first five menu options in the System Management group allow you to set the NAS server's time and date, configure notification options, perform a firmware update, make a schedule for powering the NAS on/off, or change the administrator's password, which you should do frequently for security reasons.

Use the Power Management menu to shutdown or reboot the NAS, set the automatic-resume option, and enable or disable EuP mode. With EuP enabled, the NAS will need less energy in standby; however, WoL, AC power resumption, and power schedule on/off won't be available so long as EuP is enabled.
