Software

After you unpack the NAS, you had better load the bundled software disc into a client PC to take a look at the user's manual, or, if you are in a hurry, the quick-installation guide. You should also install the Thecus Setup Wizard because it will help you configure and find the NAS on your network.

The Thecus Backup Utility is included on the aforementioned software disc. With it, you can create backup tasks that will automate the whole procedure.

Quick Installation Guide

The quick-installation guide will show you what you should do once you unpack the NAS; install the HDDs, any network cable connection(s), and execute the Thecus Setup Wizard program.

The other steps guide through what you have to do after the Setup Wizard has finished configuring the NAS.

Initial Setup

Before you run the Setup Wizard, you should power up the NAS; however, do so without installing any HDDs into the trays. We tried it with the trays loaded and had the boot-up sequence freeze up. It worked once we powered the NAS up without the HDDs installed, and we were able to load the trays up afterward. Thecus Setup Wizard will find the server's IP on the network and will ask you for the default password, which is "admin", for you to dial in your network settings. Please make sure to change the default password to keep your data safe!

Thecus Setup Wizard is especially useful to novice users because it allows them to easily complete the initial setup phase, but it lacks the features and capabilities of similar programs provided by the competition. It, for example, cannot check if the NAS has the latest firmware installed; nor can it install an up-to-date version if you want to perform a manual firmware update. Its configuration options are also very basic, as you cannot set network or cloud-based network shares. Our test PC also uses large fonts because we run our screen at an incredibly high resolution, and, as you can see in the screenshots above, Thecus's program interface wasn't displayed properly, an issue contemporary programming techniques/frameworks would solve (e.g. the Windows Presentation Foundation framework, WPF for short).
