Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W Review

Fan Noise

Thermaltake uses an internal 140mm fan which is not very quiet. But given the specs of this PSU good cooling is certainly needed. What is a bigger issue in my opinion is that the fan speed is not temperature or load controlled. Where is the point in running constant speed when the unit is often loaded at only 10% of its maximum capacity?

Value and Conclusion

  • The Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W can be yours for around $320. Yes this is a lot of cash which you could invest in other components.
  • Insane 1200W power
  • Modular
  • Four 12V rails with up to 36A each
  • Good voltage stability
  • All cables are sleeved
  • Rock solid construction
  • Lots of connectors
  • 8-pin VGA connectors
  • High efficiency
  • Good Looks
  • Expensive
  • Bigger than your standard ATX PSU: 200mm(L)x160mm(W)x86mm(H)
  • Fan not temperature controlled - noisy
The Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W can excel with superb power delivery capability of up to 1200W. While I doubt any single system can even get close to that, it certainly gives you a nice headroom for overclocking. This headroom results in more stable voltages, than for example a 600W PSU. On the other hand you have to consider the price of $320 which is a lot of money, that could easily be spent on an upgrade that directly increases your performance. This does not mean that you should get a sucky power supply for your shiny new system - a stable PSU is very important.
What makes the Thermaltake shine over many other power supplies is all the attention to detail that has been taken into consideration while designing this unit. All cables are completely sleeved from start to end, many other manufacturers are trying to cut corners here and sleeve only up to the first connector. The modularity feature is extremely convenient to keep your cable mess at a minimum, yet you are able to connect a large number of devices without having to use Y-connectors should the need arise for it. The sheer number of connectors is just impressive, you will also get three of the new 8-pin video card power connectors in case you plan on having three highest-end video cards in the future.
The build quality of the Toughpower 1200W is excellent and the unit will sure last you for a long time, probably through several computer systems. As seen in our testing, the efficiency is also among the top, should you care about reducing the energy waste of your PC. Given the initial purchase price I doubt you could actually save money, but it will help the environment.
