Software

Toshiba offers a lightweight software application with which you can define a protected storage area within the device that may only be accessed with the right password. This should be a nice feature for business users who require a level of consumer-grade protection when it comes to their data. The software - called EX II Pad Locker - is quite intuitive and allows you to protect just a specific capacity by moving a slider up or down. Doing so will format the drive accordingly, so back any data you have on the flash drive up before doing so.

Once set up, the application is placed on the flash drive for you to access on any Windows-equipped machine. Unfortunately, there is no compatible application for Mac or Linux users.

ATTO

With Toshiba advertising 222MB/s read and 205 MB/s write speeds, it is great to see it actually perform better in both areas when tested with the classic ATTO Disk Benchmark. Here, the drive manages to squeeze out a good 10 MB/s more in terms of read speeds, while being nearly perfectly on the mark with its write performance.

CrystalDiskMark

The same continues to hold true with CrystalDiskMark. Here, some flash drives perform differently, but the Toshiba TransMemory-EX II cranks out nearly identical performance, once again delivering on its promise.

Throughout testing, the flash drive remained cool to the touch, which goes to show that Toshiba is not into any kind of trickery by pushing the internal components too hard. Some device manufacturers essentially "overclock" components to squeeze as much performance out of slower and, thus, cheaper parts, which tends to translate into quite a lot of heat and a reduction of the drive's lifespan.
