The Tt eSPORTS Talon Elite Gaming Gear Combo consists of the Talon Elite RGB gaming mouse and Dasher Mini Slim mouse pad. The mouse is pretty much the same as previous Talon models, but with different internals. It's quite a big rodent with a futuristic design and an ambidextrous form factor (even though it's mainly meant for right-handed users with side buttons on the left side only). I think such a shape with these dimensions can be good for multiple grip styles and hand sizes, but I wouldn't recommend it if your hands are shorter than 16 cm.
The surface coating is pretty good in my opinion, especially the texturing on the sides make the mouse very grippy and steady in the hands even without any rubberization. As for build quality, the Talon is not perfect, but it isn't too far from it. I did make it emit a few minor creaks in the rear, and the scroll wheel rattles in place when the mouse is shaken, but there were no other build quality issues.
Sensor-wise, the PixArt PMW3325 is a good mid-level sensor. It's accurate and has a fairly high perfect control speed, and I encountered no serious anomalies. There were about 2 ms of input lag on all CPI steps, though, which is most probably a firmware-related issue. I doubt this is going be fixed any time soon, but if you're looking at this combo as a possible purchase, high-level eSports gaming probably isn't a deciding factor. 2 ms of input lag won't factor in negatively for much of anything else.
The Talon's main buttons are pretty good, and they use switches with a nominal lifespan of 20 million clicks. Their click-feel is nice—snappy, tactile, and rather spammable. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the side buttons as they are pretty much the exact opposite and feel very mushy. The scroll wheel and middle click could be better as well.
Mouse feet are a huge letdown on this mouse, and I don't really understand how it could be let out of the factory like this. They are loud, scratchy, and far from smooth. They are very thin as well, and there are no replacement sets included in the box. The cable is quite thick, heavy, and stiff, and it generates a lot of resistance, so affixing it with some tape or using a bungee is highly recommended.
As for the software, this edition of the Tt eSPORTS Gaming Software is pretty much the best Thermaltake driver I have ever encountered. Everything works quickly and as intended; I didn't come across a single bug during testing. It looks way better than other Tt software, which is a matter of personal taste. As far as lighting goes, the Talon doesn't lack RGB capabilities, with a lot of different effects and very bright and vivid colors; however, breathing effect transitions could have been done better.
With this budget, the
Tt eSPORTS Iris Optical I reviewed previously is a far better deal even though it lacks a mouse pad and has a vastly different shape.
- Nice surface
- No raised logo
- Stitched edges
- Great build quality
- Lays flat quickly
- Pad underside doesn't stick well
Now, a few words about the mouse pad: the Dasher Mini Slim is a pretty good product if you lack space and need a compact, travel-friendly mouse pad. It has a smooth and rather quick surface—smoother than the regular SteelSeries QcK, but not as smooth as the Razer Goliathus Speed Edition, for instance. Good is also that it lays out flat rather quickly compared to many other mouse pads I've tested.
The build quality is great. I found no uneven spots or bumps. Its edges are stitched, which should counteract any fraying nicely. As for the underside, the polyurethane backing is rather tacky, but could be way better in terms of sticking to the table top. Performance-wise, I came across no issues. The pad didn't cause any anomalies with the sensors used.
A mouse and pad combo like this can be a great deal as the company doesn't have to spend money on individual packaging and some other costs, which results in a friendlier final price tag. Unfortunately, these bundles feature the lower-end of their respective product lines most of the time. Even though the mouse pad is good for the task, the mouse has some quirks for which I cannot give this combo a recommendation.
