The Package

Ultimate Ears ship their cylindrical speakers in some pretty stylish boxes. The box is very sturdy and has a plastic liner that keeps the speaker in place. Keeping in mind that the speaker itself is quite rugged, it will most definitely survive normal handling during shipping and quite a bit of violence as well.

The bundle is really limited. You get a decent charger and a cable, but not the dock. The Power Up dock, or base if you will, is sold separately for $49. If you plan on using the speaker a lot, the Power Up base is a must-have since the only other way to charge the speaker is to turn it upside down and remove a screw and a rubber cover. It feels like the Power Up base should just be part of the bundle.

Closer Examination

One of the design and engineering aspects Ultimate Ears has mastered is the fabric. Not only does it look nice, but is also IP67 waterproof, which is great for small mishaps, but more importantly for cleaning. We have washed our BLAST a few times, and the fabric still looks new and fresh. With smart speakers, this is quite a neat feature as you find yourself using them in places that are more prone to accidental spillage and dirt, like the workshop or kitchen.

While the MEGABLAST is based on the more squared-off design of the BLAST, it still blends in nicely in your home. It does have a little more character than the old BOOM design, but in a normal color, it fits into a modern-ish styled home perfectly.
