Value & Conclusion

  • The Zalman Z9 NEO sells for €60 including taxes, or for around US$56 excluding taxes.
  • Very affordable price
  • Five fans included
  • USB ports light up
  • Velcro strips for easy cable management
  • Rubber plugs on USB ports
  • Shroud inside the chassis
  • Very good liquid-cooling support
  • Can hold up to eight hard drives
  • Tool-less 3.5" hard-drive installation
  • Top cover may be removed for maximum airflow
  • Large enough opening in the motherboard tray for easy access to CPU brackets
  • ODD bays not very sturdy
  • Fans come with Molex plugs instead of 3-pin connectors (the exception being the rear fan)
The Zalman Z9 NEO may not turn any heads in terms of design since it looks nice, but is nothing out of this world. Open the conversation with the fact that it only costs US$60 and comes with five fans, though, and I can pretty much guarantee that you will get some honest attention. Zalman has done a great job in terms of price-to-performance without cutting too many corners. The only real issue are its somewhat weak 5.25" drive bay trays, which can be quite worrisome if you plan on installing an optical drive.

Besides that, the Z9 NEO scores with its solid construction and ability to hold up to eight hard drives. On top of that, you should have no issues installing large PSUs, GPUs, or 140 mm fan-equipped CPU coolers. Even so, things should look clean and organized once everything has been assembled since there are a number of great cable-management possibilities.

Overall, the Zalman Z9 NEO is quite the sexy chassis in form, function, and, first and foremost, price, a trifecta of attributes rarely found in a chassis. Now the only thing you really need to wonder about is whether you like black or white - the choice is yours.
