Laptops have all sorts of non standard resolutions these days.

Not a common resolution, that's for sure.
At 16:9 it's lower res than QHD (1440p) but it could be an ultrawide 1280p - 2560x1280 is 3.2K
Some Macbooks use 2234 vertical resolution, and that would work at 2234x1396 for 3.2K as well, but you can't just rotate the subpixels without text-clarity issues.

How is 3200x2000 lower than 2560x1440? Not that they specified the exact resolution, but Xiaomi has some laptops with a 3200x2000 display and call it 3.2k.

Minus 0.1 k and you get a 3:2 display!

On a side note I think the main reason they arrive at this resolution(s) is that I suspect it is the maximum resolution an Intel 11th gen Iris Xe Graphics can squeeze out of its eDP at 90Hz. Upping it to 12th gen increased the supported resolution, but to cut costs of developing a new panel, they just drive the same panel from their 11th gen counterparts at 120hz.

Oh, I was going on megapixels for some reason; Brainfart.

QHD is something like 3.7MP, and the two resolutions I quoted are 3.2MP. I blame that lapse on 1920x1080 being closer to 2MP than it is to 2K, numerically, and that's true even for decimal 2K, ie 2000. Ever since then I've just gone "oh, it's Megapixels" unless I think a bit harder. Doesn't help that I deal with camera megapixels as much as I deal with monitor resolutions.

Calling screens by their horizontal resolution only makes sense for standard aspect ratios. Ultrawides or tallboys mustn't use the "K" convention because without a corresponding vertical designation (either with words like ultrawide, or with an aspect ratio) the actual resolution is still undefined.

Common resolutions are all based on TVs, since that drives the primary resolution of what's manufactured:
  • 480p predated LCD, so it's not used for modern displays.
  • 720p started it all with HD
  • 1080p was the 50% better upgraded Full-HD
  • 1440p is four 720p regions of mother glass when dividing up the substrate
  • 4K is four 1080p regions.
  • 5K will be four 1440p regions
Laptops and phones aren't tied to 16:9 economies of scale the way desktop monitors are, so they are both more expensive (lower volume) and come in a much wider selection of resolutions and aspect ratios. Those economies of scale for desktop displays are also why a 21:9 ultrawide is usually a lot more than 30% more expensive than their 16:9 counterparts, despite being only 30% more panel.

Honestly, it's sealed on all sides except for that miserable selection of vents buried in the screen hinge. Remember, half of them must be INTAKE, and the only air they have access to is right next to the exhaust vent, some of which will have been deflected by the screen back towards the intake.

I've dealt with so many laptops with this design before and 35W is ridiculously optimistic. Usually they are 15W models and they overheat after 5 minutes of PL1/Boost at 25W.
