Age of Wonders 4 Gets a Bunch of Hotfixes on PC

Paradox Interactive states: "To my fellow Godir. First off, we want to thank you for the awesome release! It's been amazing seeing so many of you finally getting your hands on the game. Many of you have been able to enjoy the game as we intended but there have been difficulties along the way. Over the past few days we've been hard at work to address the most common issues that have popped up. The people on the Hotfix branch have been incredibly helpful in tracking down the Graphics Driver issues and we're now confident in rolling out the fixes at large."

For users with the NVIDIA Graphics cards defined below, that have experienced frequent crashes, we have added a Driver Workaround setting. This setting will be automatically enabled for the affected users and should alleviate the most commonly experienced crashes. May your Pantheons Thrive

Not yet. I played 3 and Planetfall. 3 was okay, and I dumped quite a few hours into PF and enjoyed the sci-fi setting more than the fantasy setting. But from folks I know that played far more of 1-3 and PF than did, 4 is rating very very well among them. Every one of them told me to go get it, but I'm holding out for a bit.

I am noob with x4 games, I didn't play the previous titles in this series, but having lots of fun with this one. Hard to put it down, always "just one more turn" :D
This patch also seems to be really good, well at least the crashes are completely gone for me now.
Keep in mind, I have and AMD gpu and the game wasn't crashing that hard, just sometimes. Now it seems to be fixed, I didn't even enable that driver workaround setting in the options menu.

A little better, a little worse, than Age of Wonders 3 with the current release (can change over the eventual expansions).

Some personal gripes:

- Only ugly or grandpa/grandma faces for most races. I can't be a youthful Elf male Adonis or an atheletic young Ork female even if I wanted to, unlike in AoW3.
- Not very many special units; no race-specific units or class/faction-specific units, also not many special production units either, unlike AoW3 where certain NPC buildings give access to special creatures that can be produced at the controlling city.
- Not very many fantasy races to play with.
- Not many racial change magic options to play with either.
- Flying units and Fireproof units can't cross Underground lava lakes/pools for some stupid reason.
-- Related, Flying units can't cross water until the player researches naval crossing.
- Empire points and Diplomacy options are a bit clunky.
- Not as many World Spells as AoW3 that could alter the terrain or add/change biomes or dramatically affect enemy units (currently, it's more convenient to just spam multiple sustained buffs on your armies).
- Not able to steamroll enemies with a bunch of Mythic units due to maintenance caps, unlike AoW3 where if you got careless, your opponents could steamroll you with multiple mythics as you could do to them.

If you were to ask me if I would recommend the game, I'd say not really, at least right now unless you just wanted a new 4x game to try. AoW3 with all its expansions is more engaging than AoW4, and just has more options to play with.

They make it much better to multiplayer with a desync corrector. However, even that isn't flawless. When it happens during a played battle, it can completely change the outcome of the battle. Which happened once to a friend who lost hours of gameplay as it turned a winning battle into a losing one and he lost his empire.

Also generally, it's not as good as 3. However, it has enough improvements in other areas that are better than 3. It's just in a very awkward teething phase right now. Paradox is trying to figure out how to make an AOW game while also trying to DLC it to hell and not piss off fans.

It's great. Looks and plays brilliant. If you enjoy turn based strategy this hits the spot. I haven't experienced any bugs which is unusual given that I've already clocked up 20 hours.
