Hi out there,

im starting this log because it could be interested for some people. I haven't found a lot of documentation on systems based on an Asus ProArt X670E board. Especially when using it with Linux.

As my first words already show i will have a bigger project in front. I'm transferring from Windows towards Linux. More specific MintLinux in the cinnnamon flavor. My actual pc is a AMD Ryzen system built in 2019. It hat a Ryzen 3800x as a prozessor and a Sapphire pulse 5700xt as a graphics card. aside the 32GB consists of 4 8GB 3600MHz Ram it also has a PCIe 4.0 SSD from Sabrent, The CPU is watercooled by a custom build. Cinebench 23 tells me 1.321 SC and 12.589 MC Points. But all of that doesn't work very fast for me. I did program a lot inside Excel and got a quite complicated Workbook. Also i do scan and process 3D Modells fpr 3D Printing. At all of those tasks i have to wait a lot. A full recalc of my primary Excel workbook takes around 15 minutes. You don't want to know how long 3D Modelling can take. ;) So i decided to "upgrade my system". In detail it will become a full new build at first. Later i might upgrade the cooling to a full custom loop. But also there i will keep and reuse the Pump and possibly the cpu-cooler. I'm running this system with 2 32" WQHD (2560x1440) monitors. Also i use to change my keyboard depending what i want to do. Sometimes i use my Cherry stram (wireless) and sometimes my Logitech MX Keys. As Mouse I use a MX Mouse 3 and also a MX Ergo Trackball.

I started sourcing last month and got an anides AI-Crystal XL Case for my build. It is capable to integrate my BluRay-Burner. Also there is space for 6 140mm fans and additionaly 9 120mm fans. There will be a lot of airflow inside to cool down all the components. I will have to construct and print different parts for the case so that everything vill be integrated. All Prints are made with Anycubic ABS-Alike Resin on my Elegoo Saturn 2 printer. The system on it's own is not fully defined yet. I got the Case and also the mainboard. Now i'm on sourcing all the cooling equipment and the PSU. I estimate the end of the sourcing phase in November. But till then i will have to decide i.e. which GFX card i will use.

Right now i bought/own (last standings):

As a next stepp i will have to buy an apropriate PSU. Different available calculators tells me that my Seasonic 850W PSU is not strong enough. I will need more power. At least 900W are suggested. At this build i will prefer a bequiet PSU. If it will be delivering 1.000W or 1.200watts is still not defined. But i think it will be the best to go for the 1.2kW version anyway. If the choosen AiO will have problems to cool the cpu i have enough backup for a more complex custom cooling loop.

At least this workstation is not intended to play. I have only a license for American and also european truck simulator and for shorter timeframes (when waiting for a process to be finished) i use to play sudoku.I hope that some will enjoy this build log and the upcoming results. If some will critisize my choosen parts, just do it. I'm always open and do not belong to a special marque. ;)

Edit 05/29/2023:
There will be quite a lot of RGB components on this build. Beside the fans also two stripes on the left and right. When using the AiO the pump also is enlighted. I planned to have a kind of status at the stripes. Divided into at least two parts. The upper on should only signal the on/off state whilst the lower was intended to show the CPU Temperature by color. At windows the AquaComputer Farbwerk360 controllers can handle that with ease. But as i also use linux i lost. AquaComputers AquaSuite only runs at Windows.. They don't suport Linux. Bad Software-Engineering. The adopt only Microsoft Dotnet. If they would belong to the open source alternative Mono it would be possible easily. Without a plus on work. So in the last the stripes all over will only signal that the machine is running. For a test i aso include a remote on/off switch. I don't know where to place it exactly. My next Build will hang on a wall. I cannot reach that position at the wall easily so then i will need that switch. Now i test it if it is trustworthy. The provided fans will be in Red. The pump will be in white. No other gimmicks. Just one color.

The next order concentrates on Power. I think about ordering a new PSU and additional things to spread the prower to the different items:
  • 1200 Watt be quiet! Straight Power 11 Platinum Modular 80+
  • be quiet! 12VHPWR PCI-E Adapter Cable CPH-6610
  • Alphacool Spritzflasche Core 250ml
  • Phobya Temperatursensor Innen-/Außengewinde G1/4 - black matt
  • Alphacool Core 6x 4-Pin PWM/DRGB Splitter mit SATA-Stromanschluss
  • EK Water Blocks EK-Loop D-RGB Extension Cable (510mm)
  • ANYCUBIC ABS-Like UV Resin+ Rapid Curing 405nm Photopolymer Harz für 3D Drucker
  • Noctua NT-H2 10g, Wärmeleitpaste für Computer inkl. 10 Reinigungstücher (10g)
The reason for this bundle is the fact that the main supplier of those products send out theit products without postal costs if one orders at night between 4pm and 06 am and the order total will be higher than 150€. Otherwie they charge 8.99 Eur pstal fees for the order. So I tried to identify the goods bought by this dealrship ti minimize the postral costs.

The PSu including the additional cable will guarantee a proper power supply with either an AMD 6950XT or a NVIDIA 4070TI. I also thought about a (used) NVidia Quadro A4000 as an option. As i still don't know for which i will go on hunt I have to take care about all of them. The needed Power will be in the range of 850 to 900W. I could also get a 1000W PSU. But as the difference to the selected 1200W PSU is real low i decided to get the bidder one.

In this build a total of 15 fans will be mounted. As i already explained before i cannot use my Quadro Fan controller because of the lack od Aquacomputer to get basic values from the board without using a service. So the full cooling system has to be controlled by the board. The board has all over 6 PWM-headers for fans. Those ones will be used. The CPU Fan Header will control the 3 140mm radiator fans. The basic value is the Water Temperature at the loop. As hot the water gets as fanst the fans have to work. The AIO Pump is controlled by the CPU Temperature. As hot the CPU gets as high the flow has to be to reduce this heat. The rest of the fans will be controlled by the temperature of the VCH/PCH/M.2 Temperature. I didn't defind this use of the last Temperature yet as it will be have to be defined at tests. The Board has the ability to use one external temperature sensor. I will use the Water temperatur on this as i need that value for the pump.

Hi again,

I just ordered my planned items for this month:

[updated the list]
1* 1000 Watt MSI MPG A1000G Modular 80+ Gold
1* EK Water Blocks EK-Quantum Torque STC 10/16 - 6er-Pack, Satin Titanium
3* EK Water Blocks EK-Quantum Torque STC 10/16 Anschluss gerade G1/4 Zoll - Satin Titanium
2* EK Water Blocks EK-Quantum Torque Winkel 90 Grad G1/4 Zoll AG auf G1/4 Zoll IG - Satin Titanium
1* EK Water Blocks EK-Quantum Torque T- Splitter 3x G1/4 Zoll IG - Satin Titanium
1* EK Water Blocks EK-Quantum Torque Verschlussstopfen G1/4 Zoll - schwarz
1* EK Water Blocks EK-CryoFuel Fertiggemisch Blood Red, 1L
13* EK Water Blocks EK-Loop D-RGB Extension Cable (510mm)
3* Alphacool Core 6x 4-Pin PWM/DRGB Splitter mit SATA-Stromanschluss
1* Alphacool Eiszapfen Temperatursensor G1/4 IG/IG mit AG Adapter - Deep Black
1* Alphacool Apex Fillport - schwarz

It seems to be a cheap buy except of the PSU. But those small items sum up to a bigger total. In this turn i did spend 430€ whreby the PSU costs 210€. Never forget to think about small things. In Germany we have a proverb named "Kleinvieh macht auch Mist" or translated into english "small livestock also makes crap".

The AiO i intend to build in is custom configured. Alphacool uses its custom loop products to generate a full AiO. I made the same. But i did not use only Alphacool products. I like the satin finish of the EKWB torque fittings much more. So i selected them. I also didn't like the thin Radiators used at Alphacool's AiO. So i'd choosen a 45mm XT45 version. It is highly possible that i will transform the AiO into a full custom loop at a later time. So i have also choosen the cooling liquid to a version/color i will use in the full loop. The liquid is used right now at my actual machine since 2019 and no separation of color, ingridients and watr was seen. It is a stable mix. I will keep on that. Also i use the fittings since 2019 in a nickel version. I don't like that shiny but the design is great. Why not making the workstation looking (in own eyes) good?

I think of getting a NVidia 4070ti graphics card for this rig. I have to take care of the power supply. right now i'm using a Seasonic 850W PSU. That is definitly not strong enough to deliveer enough power forthe new configuration. So i had to buy a new one. As i don't know how much of the cables are provided i need that PSU at an early stage so i can order needed cables whilst the sourcing phase. With that i do not need to wait at the end.

I also need to know more about the dRGB capabilities of the Mainboard. Does it support one color at all the dRGB Headrs or different ones at ech header. If the last is appropriate i'm able to drop the farbwerk360 controllers. I want to have all over 3 colors. A red for all the fans. A white for the pump/agb and a green at the side stripes to indicate that the computer is up and running.

Thanks fpr your suggestion.

As i don't know why you would take the seasonic. I have a Seasonic and also a BeQuiet PSU working since 2019. The BeQuiet is built into my backup Workstation. It works like the seasonic fine without any problems since then. Right now my favorite dealership sells the BeQueit with a bigger rebate. Whilst the seasonic is sold at a privetag of 280€ i will have to pay 10 for the BeQuiet. To be honest. The biggest reason to choose the BeQuiet because is the lower price. Why should i pay a lot more if not needed? I could talk about local patriotism. BeQuiet is a german company and i'm also a german. :D But that is not the case. As i wrote initially. I don't belong to special firms. I'm interested if the product fulfills my needs and then i take the cheaper version. At my side i don't see a real reason to choose the seasonic. If you have some on your hand so let me know.

For me it is not the first build. And i will post some pics. I'm also a member of Builds.gg where the build is also placed. Upfront i'm not that photography artist. :D So please be kind about any picture i post. I use a Lumix FZ1000 cam but im more the all-at-auto-Specialist. :D

It is also a funny build. I never heard about a self costumized AiO with a fillport. I will have one. The choosen AiO Cooler has some issues when refilling. If one wants to fill the loop it is highly possiple that drops of the coolant lands on the motherboard because of the position of that fillport. I'm gonna avoid that by building a seperate one. In detail all of the AiO is unusual. Having parts mixed up from Alphacool and EKWB. Using a 420mm 45mm thick radiator, using unusual fans and so on.At all it is not unrealistic that i will upgrade to a full custom loop. I plan to install PCEe 5.0 SSD's. The throttle their speed very fast with classical cooling. So they might be integraated to the custom loop quite fast. And if i integrate the SSD's i will also do so with the ram. But there i could either use an additional pump or setting up a different cooling system with also 2 radiators and a distroplate.

In difference to my first thoughts i ordered a 1000 Watt MSI MPG A1000G PSU. For my needs 1000W is really enough, but it has in comparism to the BeQuiet a single 12V rail. Different revies name it a hidden champion. I want to thank User @AMF for his intervention which made me thinking about my selection of the PSU.

What do you mea. When you say you’re building an AIO? Sounds like a custom loop to me, but maybe I’m missing something?

Well. For me in a custom loop a full D5/DDC is integrated. A separate coolung device for the cpu-cooler, a surge tank and so on. In my build those devices are integrated into one small unit. Like at every other AiO. The difference is that alphacool allows to buy all units of an AiO seperately. And in that way they also combine their ownb AiO's. They take a radiator a developed AiO Pump with G/14 connectors and so on. At one hand standard equipment for a custom loop on the other special designed and pretty small. And with that i have the opportunity to define my own AiO. This is why i name it an AiO.

About the water cooling and an AiO:

You all are right when mentioning that this is already a custom loop. At all i'm able upgrade my plan easily. I already own a Watercool Heatkiller IV for AM4. i would not even need to buy an upgrade Kit for AM5. Also i own a EKWB Pump/Tube Combo with a builtin D5. Everything is here. But i hesitate to use them. I do so because i don't know how good the Heatkiller will cool down the planned 7950x. There is a devil and an angel sitting on my shoulders. Just when i finished up with one version the other side is telling me that i'm wrong. It would be real easy to decide if one side would be more expensive or would have major advantages. But i see more advantages and also mire risks to take the heatkiller etc equipment. Financially it is a joke to compare them. Keeping in mind that this build will cost aroud 4.000€ and above we are talking at this point about 20€.

I received my last order. It took me some work to get them. I had to write mails naming applicable laws till all that made it to the delivery service. Why the people want to have it hard. Life could be so easy... It is still unknown if i will need this PSU. But it is like with condoms. Better have one and don't need one that need them and don't have one. ;) The small parts belong mainly to the loop and the fans for the new rig.

Today i ordered a bit more. Especially the Fans i did want to have and the drain for my custom loop.

As Fans i'd choosen the Zalman SF120*3 + Z-SYNC and also the bigger 140mm version. They look so unusual. But if their parameters are correct they are in the middle of the BeQuiet! Lightwings in normal and the high speed version. So they should be fine for the case and also for the radiator. I'm really excited about the fans and the question if they work as they should do.

I promised to make some pictures of my new build. I'm well known that i keep my promises. If i cannot trust myself whom i can trust generally? So here are some first ones.

P1010042.JPG P1010044.JPG

The fans (120mm) at the front without the cover. They are looking real unusual. But it's a "pain in the a**" to mount them. One really has to take care that the propeller runs quiet and don't rattle at the case.

You can see also my old CPU-Cooler on the mainboard. The CPU is still missing but i needed to know how the new standoffs are cooperating with my old cooler. Ther are some differences betrween my older X470 board and the new one.

P1010052.jpg P1010054.jpg

As you can see i used the original backplate. I don't know if i will have to exchange it with that one delivered by EKWB with the used cooler.

As far as I'm aware, AM5 backplate is non-removable. If anything, EK provided one for an AM4 build since it shares the mount points with AM5.
If there's any issues with that due to spacing, I guess you'd need to contact EK support.

Thanks a lot. Everything is dismountable at the board. But it's an total other question if it is wise? I took of the front part and then mounted at the given backplate (Mainboard mounted one) the stand offs. If the spacing is fine will be recognized when i mount the CPU. Right now i did take a papertowel below to save the cooler from scratches. Also i will have to clean the cooler. Nevertheless i have a mass of Isopropanol and Aceton here. I use them for cleaning when 3D Printing. Also Cilit Bang in Green could be a possibility. That detergent also "eats" 3M glue from heated beds.

Edit:
I forgot. If the EKWB Velocity cooler doesn't work good with the applied Standoffs i willl change the cooler. I also have a Watercool Heatkiller here. But that one is build into my actial rig. So i would have to exchange both to set free the heatkiller.

I got a Picker to use it for the small srews on the mainboard (i.e. M2). I will have to wait around 30 days for delivery. I got'em at AliExpress. At my younger times i used them to solder SMD platines. Now they are used in a piercing studio.

I think it's time to say a few words about the custom watercooling loop.

Right now i plann to cool down the CPU with this loop. I will use two M.2 SSD's onboard and also two Rams. If their temperature will become too high i will have to expand my cooling loop also to this items. As i use an Alphycool distroplate there are enough ports to integrate everything. The main loop will rout from the plate to the cpu and after that to a radiator. After cooling down the water it gets back to the distroplate. If i need to cool down also the named items they can be connected to the GPU ports. Getting from their to the ram and SSD's to a radiator and back to the distroplate. There will also be a fillport on top of the case and a drainport. The radiator of the CPU will be a 420mm radfiator on top of the case. If i will need to cool down the rest also there will be a second radiator on the buttom with a size of 360mm. That should be enough. Both radiator will blow out the air. As my air intake in the Front holds 6* 120 mm fans and i also will blow in at the rair with a 140mm fan i will always have a higher air pressure inside the case. So all the dust will get out of the case. If there is a need for a bigger radiator i also have a phobya laying around with 9 140mm fans mounted on it.

The Distroplate will need a self constructed holder. Originally the case is not made to hold the distroplate straight after the air filter on the side. 3D Printing and 3D Builder is the solution for this. The whole LED System will be driven by two Aquacomputer Farbwerk360. Those controllers need to have a stable mounting plate. Also those will be constructed and printed by me. For all that printing i will use black ABS Like Resin. To be honest, i already constructed that holding plate for the two Farbwerk360. A lot of construction and Printing to hold the loop. ;)

Btw. The CPU will be an AMD Ryzen 7950x and I think about a NVidia RTX A5000 as graphics card. Alternately i will take an Intel Arc A770. The ram will be DDR5 with 64GB. One SSD will be 2TB and the second will be 4T. Both as PCIe 4.0.

I checked it clearly defined if a NVidia RTX A5000 will fasten my programs in any way. Neither construction (3D Builder, 3D Scan) nor Slicing (Cura, Chitubox, Lychee) will benefit by that cards in general. So for me that seems to be a waste of money. It is highly possible that i will take an Acer Predator BiFrost Intel Arc A770 with 16GB RAM for the workstation. This card isis really appropriate to display the dektop. Till now i use an AMD Sapphire Radeon WX 5700XT 8GB without any problem. All the programs i use (incl. Office and LibreOffice) will run fine with that smaller card.

If one has different information so let me know.

Now i had several time huge problems with my actual computer. He didnt boot up. he was trapped in a "nin bootable drive" Bluescreen. The drive was indicated as raw. But when using Linux it was shown as a correct NTFS Drive. I tried to change it. I tried to write new Boot blocks and also boot sectors. but nothing helped. Linux mint runs quite fine as a live system. The NTFS drive is accessible without any issue. Im just writing this lines from that system. I will save the rest of my data and then either install linux or Win again. But to be honest. dont like windows and i really dont know that exactly why i should install it again. Especially as my real old Noteboot runs right now an installation where i have to configure some more things.

After the issues i faced and described above i installed an actual Mint Linux. The installation ran smooth. The major apps are installed. I will need to migrate the Data. I.e. 19GB of Mails from several Outlook PST Files to Thunderbird/SeaMonkey/Evolution. Also my calculations from Excel towards LibreCalc. At that last item especially the macros i wrote are in scope. That are around 5.000 lines of code. When the new system is available i will run it on a pure Linux installation. For the process of data migration i use an oolder Lenovo I5 Notebook i own. That special Windows tasks like 3D scanning etc will be done at a new Notebook/mobile Workstation i will have to buy at a later point. But this strange habit i don't want to see anymore.

On my way towards Linux i need to migrate some Data. But the major tablework is running right now. I'm getting annoyed by the speed of saving a sheet. It takes several minutes till LibreOffice did that.

Beside that i ordered some stuff. Originally a bit more than only a few things. This month my cooling system get finished. I decided to buy that new AlphaCool CPU cooler. In first tests it shows that this cooler is much better than my originally intended EKWB Velocity (the old version one). It is said that the difference should be around at least 10°C lower. The Distroplate is heading in. Also the Resin for printing the needed parts. I also think and test, which Tools i should use in Linux for the drawings and generation of the models needed to print (i.e. the holder for that distroplate). Besides this some tools are heading in to mount the fillport and the drain...

With that order right now i will have some time to design//construct and print the mounting parts whilst im sourcing the rest. I decided also that i will next buy first all the internals of my new rig. And at last i will have to get the GFX-Card and an transfer USB-Stick. The 16TB Backup drive (HDU) will be built in internally. So i do not have to use USB-Ports for that and at all i have less external cables boxes.

A few days ago i ordered some stuff like the Distroplate, resin, some tools etc. Nearby all got delivered in meantime.

The rest of my cooling stuff i won't buy anything from Alphacool anymore. I thought the manufacturer wants to kidden me with that delivered Distroplate. They did add 5 Plugs for 11 ports. Even with a CPU cooler and a radiator i would need at least 7 plugs. So i will order them from EKWB. The radiator i still need and possibly new coolers I will also order at EKWB. They didn't even tried to take me by surprise. I won't spend even one cent for Alphacool products. If they wanted to force me to order more products (i.e. the needed plugs) with their name on it they lost that game. I'm not a small and dumb customer. They had their chance to keep me and they messed it up. So i had to enhance my order list a bit. At those system price that doesn't matter that much. 40€ more or less at a total of 5.000€ isn't that much at all.

I also got the resin to print the needed things. If it is of interest: i ordered ABS Like resin from Anycubic. In the past I had good experiences with that material on my Elegoo Saturn 2 Printer. If that 420mm XFlow radiator doesn't perform that much i will use an external 9*140mm external radiator staying around at my home. I also have the needed fans and a PWM-Splitter for it. I used it before i relocated and had no space around my actual rig.

Last night i did print the needed mounting plate for the two Farbwerk360. It will be placed at the bottom of the case whrere also the PSU is lodging. That compartment is not visible from the outside.

To say it clearly. I created that model on my own. There is no other copyright to take care about. Originally it was designed by Microsoft 3D Builder on my old rig.

Edit:
I also ordered some more parts for my build. the radiator, a 420mm xflow 45mm tall EKWB. some more parts for the tubing of the drain port and also for mounting the CPU Cooler. Now the cooling system should be finished. I will build all in when the parts arrived. I will keep all on track what will be done or ordered.

The last parts of my Cooloing system came today. I guess a 420mm X-Flow Radiator is enough to keep the coolant at a lower temperatur. Especially when living in Germany and not in South Africa. ;D Also a hell of small parts arrived at my site. So i can start to integrate the distro plate at the place i intended and construct the whole holding system for it. That will take some time as i don't have that experience in OpenSCAD yet.

Cutting the space into the sidepanel for that distroplate wasn't that easy. Happily now i know why i bought and own an original Dremel with a hell of addons. It's a wired one. I also own a Dremel-Clone. It took me 4 cutting discs to cut that space. The rest will be done traditionally by hand with a file. I need to do that to get the printed frame fully integrated. One cannot cut straight when using the small disc of a dremel. After i adjusted the size of the cut i will have to positioning the Distro plate because the is additional +/- 3cm of space between the radiator on top and the drives in the bottom of the case. When positioned correctly the last step will be the correct sizing inside the CAD and printing for a last time.

btw. The panel of this certain case has a thickness 2mm of pure alloy. Not that bad if one forget the price. :D
