This Week in Gaming (Week 21)

To call this a busy week of game releases would be an understatement and there should be something for everyone except those that want a new sports or racing game of some kind. This week's AAA title is all about precious things, but we also have games covering the post-human world on earth, rescue missions, hammers of war, the colour yellow and snakes, for those that are into those kinds of things. Oddly enough, most of the games this week are released on Tuesday, so we included a whole bunch of new releases on the same day of week this time around due to this, not because we hate the other days of the week.

This Week in Gaming (Week 18)

As we leave the month of April behind us and move into May, we kick off the new month with a AAA horror first person shooter from Bethesda. The first week of May also brings a AAA 4X title, giant turtles, a Halo like game that adds an RTS element, multiple adventure titles and a game that's all about running away from conscription in the Russian army. Not a bad start to the month of May, if we may say so.

Sony Sold 6.3 Million PS5s Last Quarter and 19.1 Million Units During FY22

Sony has had a very good year when it comes to PlayStation 5 sales, as the company sold no less than 19.1 million units in FY22, which exceeded the forecasted volume of 18 million units by a fair margin. Sony's financial year runs from April to March, so the first three months of 2023 was the last three months of its FY22, during which the company sold no less than 6.1 million consoles. That's up from a mere two million units in the last quarter of FY21, which is no small increase and shows the popularity of the PS5. Sony also mentioned that they've caught up with demand and are able to deliver PS5s to customers without the need to pre-order or having to wait for their orders to arrive, in almost all locations globally. As for FY23, Sony is hoping to sell even more consoles, with a target of 25 million units. To date, Sony has sold around 38.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles.

That said, it's not all good news, as game sales were down from US$70.5 million to US$68 million a year ago quarter to quarter and dropped from 303.2 million to 264.2 million FY21 vs FY22. Sony also lost some four million users of its PlayStation Network service, but the company saw a slight increase in its PS Plus subscription base. Sony saw a boost in revenue in its Gaming and Networking Services business unit from US$4.9 billion in FY21 to US$7.9 billion in FY22. As a whole, Sony had sales of some US$29 billion, or 3.9 trillion Yen if you prefer, despite struggling with a weak Yen vs. the US Dollar.

This Week in Gaming (Week 17)

InnoLux Goes IGZO for its Upcoming Gaming Display Panels

IGZO or Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide is a type of semiconducting material that has been used in displays by Sharp since 2012, although mainly for mobile devices courtesy of being more power efficient compared to standard IPS panels. There doesn't seem to have been much interest by other players in the display industry to use the material, although there have been other IGZO based display panels in the past. However, at Touch Taiwan, InnoLux showed off no less than two new display panels relying on IGZO, both targeting gamers. Both panels measure 27-inches and support HDR 600. The 2560 x 1440 model is capable of a massive 480 Hz, a refresh rate that was only possible using TN panels to date.

The second display panel offers 3840 x 2160 resolution at 240 Hz, which isn't unique on the market, but as these IGZO panels are based around IPS rather than VA technology, they shouldn't suffer from the dreaded ghosting that many VA panels suffer from. InnoLux was very sparse on other technology details, but both panels have a 98 percent DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage and the QHD display has a grey to grey response time of 3 ms, whereas the 4K variant is a bit higher at 5 ms. Both panels looked stunning and this might be what many gamers have been waiting for, at least as a stop gap before OLED displays become more affordable.

AUO Has 8K Gaming TV Panel with 120 Hz Refresh Rate and 4608 Zone FALD

TPU doesn't normally cover TVs, but at Touch Taiwan had a new gaming focused TV panel that might very well end up in some very high-end gaming "monitors" as well. The panel is a 65-inch model that supports 7680 x 4320 resolution at up to 120 Hz. However, the high-end specs don't stop there, as the panel has a 4,608 zone full array local dimming backlight, which gives it a typical brightness of 400 cd/m², but it can go up to 1,800 cd/m² at 10 percent areas in HDR mode.

As with the 4K display panel we wrote about earlier, this TB panel also features AUO's A.R.T. "reflectionless" feature, which should prevent it from being overly reflective in brightly lit areas. The demo panel was powered by MediaTek's Pentonic 2000 SoC, which is currently one of the highest-end 8K TV processors and potentially the only one with support for H.266 video decoding. Sadly we don't have any indication on which TV manufacturers will use the new display, but regardless of the brand, we expect the retail products to be very expensive.

AUO Shows Off 4K 240 Hz A.R.T Gaming Monitor Display Panel

AUO has been busy developing what the company calls Advanced Reflectionless Technology or A.R.T. which the company was showing off at the Touch Taiwan trade show. The panel in question was a 32-inch, 4K AHVA panel, which is AUO's own variant of IPS. Although the panel was set up so there were fewer reflections in the area where it was being displayed, the panel did seem to be less reflective compared to other displays sitting next to it. However, it's always hard to judge these things on a show floor, so we'll have to wait for some reviews before passing final judgement on A.R.T. but it looks like a promising technology when it comes to reducing unwanted reflections.

The panel is also one of the first 4K panels capable of delivering a 240 Hz refresh rate, although it's going to be hard finding a graphics card capable of driving all games at that kind of refresh rate at 4K resolution. Sadly the brightness is only 400 cd/m², although AUO claims 1 ms grey to grey response time with overdrive enabled and a 95 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, which is better than most 4K gaming panels on the market today. Sadly, AHVA panels suffer from IPS glow, just as normal IPS panels, which can clearly be seen in the second image below.

AUO to Unveil 49-inch Ultrawide Curved 5K 360 Hz Gaming Display Panel at Touch Taiwan

Tomorrow, the Touch Taiwan trade show kicks off in Taipei and AUO will be showing off a range of new products at the show, which TPU will be attending, so we'll have some hands/eyes on coverage this week. As far as gaming monitors are concerned, the big announcement from AUO is a 49-inch ultrawide, curved 5K display panel that supports refresh rates of up to 360 Hz. The company didn't reveal the actual resolution in its press release, but we'll find out at the trade show what 5K resolution means in this case, as it's most likely 5120 x 1440, since this is what most 32:9 5K displays offer today.

AUO will also be showing off a 24-inch, 540 Hz, 1080p display panel that the company claims will "eliminate screen tearing, stuttering, and ghosting issues. There's no mention of the display panel used, but it's most likely a TN panel. Somewhat less gaming related, AUO will also have a 17.3-inch, transparent Micro LED notebook panel on display, which the company says will enhance the display quality under glare, something they'll hopefully be demoing at the trade show.

Shipments of Gaming Monitors Fell to 19.8 Million Units in 2022, Expected to Recover in 2023

TrendForce's latest research revealed that shipments of gaming monitors have seen their first decline since 2016 due to high inflation, resulting in only 19.8 million units being shipped in 2022 for a 13% YoY decline. TrendForce predicts that demand should recover in 2023 however, jumping back up to 20.8 million units—an increase of 5% YoY. This recovery will mostly be driven by three factors: First, a number of brands are replacing their 75 Hz models with 100 Hz models. Second, the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games is scheduled to take place in the third quarter, where Esports is set to be one of the competing categories. This will help drive up demand for gaming products. Lastly, China has finally begun lifting COVID restrictions, which means demand for Internet cafes should gradually recover.

TrendForce reveals that vertical alignment (VA) LCD monitors took the lion's share of the market in 2022 at 51%. This was followed by in-plane switching (IPS) LCD monitors at 43.4%, and finally twisted nematic (TN) LCD monitors accounted for 5%. However, it's worth noting that OLED gaming monitors have grown in popularity, taking 0.6% of the market share in 2022. Thanks to the diversification of OLED products, that market share is expected to grow to 1.6% in 2023. Furthermore, TrendForce predicts that IPS monitors may begin competing with VA monitors given that not only are IPS products increasing their market share but many IPS gaming monitors are seeing a continuous price reduction.

This Week in Gaming (Week 15)
