MSI Shows Off Spatium M570 PRO Flagship SSD with FROZR and FROZR+ Cooling Solutions

A recurring trend at Computex has been to market flagship Gen 5 NVMe SSDs and the cooling solutions required for them to reach their potential, as separate products. MSI showed off its flagship Spatium M570 PRO Gen 5 NVMe SSD that's capable of sequential transfer speeds as high as 14 GB/s. The company demoed a single drive posting 14520 MB/s reads and 12409 MB/s writes on CDM, when paired with its FROZR+ active fan-heatsink. An add-on card with two M.2 Gen 5 slots, and two of these M570 PRO drives in RAID with FROZR passive heatsinks, posts 22024 MB/s reads with 23130 MB/s writes as measured by CDM.

The Spatium FROZR+ cooling solution uses an extruded aluminium monoblock heatsink to which a C-shaped heatpipe spreads heat drawn from the drive. This heatsink is ventilated by what looks like a 40 mm version of MSI's TorX 5.0 fan with a webbed impeller that's designed to guide all of its airflow axially. MSI claims that the FROZR+ cooler reduces controller temperatures by up to 30°C. The Spatium FROZR is a passive cooling solution that uses an aluminium fin-stack heatsink to which heat drawn from the SSD is fed by two 6 mm heatpipes. MSI claims this thing can lower controller temperatures by up to 20°C. Look at the sizes of cooling solutions for Gen 5 NVMe SSDs in general (across brands), we wonder why AIC SSDs with VGA-grade cooling solutions aren't making a comeback.

Akasa's Gecko Turbo Cooler for SSDs Features a Blower Fan

There has been no shortage of various SSD coolers to date, but none seems to have implemented a blower fan as yet. Well, Akasa decided that it was a product that was needed in the market and was showing off its Gecko Turbo Cooler at Computex. The heatsink part of the cooler is dwarfed by the blower fan that sits on top of it, making for a rather amusing looking device. As to the noise level, we can only guess, as it wasn't plugged in, but blower fans don't tend to be the quietest fans around. That said, it's likely to bring the best airflow of any M.2 SSD cooler to date, even though it might be a tad excessive, even for PCIe 5.0 SSDs.

HP Shows New Portable SSD P900 and Other Storage Products at Computex 2023

HP brought some of its storage products to the Computex 2023 show, including the new HP Portable SSD P900, a portable storage option that will be available in 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities, as well as plenty of color options, including Grey, Black, Silver, Green, and Pink. It also showed some storage cards and the FX900 Plus PCIe Gen 4 M.2 NVMe SSD.

The HP Portable SSD P900 is pretty compact at 71x52x8.6 mm and weighs just 60 g. The sequential read and write speed are at 2,000 MB/s, which pretty much tops out the Type-C USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface. The HP Portable SSD P900 will be backed by a 3-year warranty.

PNY Shows Off M.2 SSD Heatsink with Two Fans and RGB Bling

PNY at the 2023 Computex, showed off an M.2-2280 SSD cooling solution with nor one, but two fans, in what is a sign of things to come with upcoming PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs. The cooler features an extruded aluminium monoblock heatsink with a pair of 20 mm fans at its two ends. The central portion of the cooler has the bulk of its aluminium fins. A top-plate has an RGB illuminated, stylized PNY logo, which can be synchronized with the lighting of your PNY XLR8 Verto EPIC-X graphics cards. It's smarter on PNY's part to market the cooler as a separate product, than part of any upcoming PCIe Gen 5 SSD.

Milk-V Pioneer Developer Board Combines 64-Core RISC-V SoC with mATX Modularity

Chinese RISC-V developers Milk-V Technology and SOPHGO recently announced their collaborative open source Milk-V Pioneer developer motherboard and workstation based on the SOPHON SG2042 RISC-V server SoC. The SOPHON SG2042 is a 64-core, 2 GHz SoC based on T-Head Semiconductor's XuanTie C920 64-bit processor design which features clusters of one to four cores, each a 12-stage out-of-order multiple issue superscalar pipeline, and a 128-bit vector engine based on the preliminary RISC-V V Extension version 0.7.1. The SG2042 packs in 64+64 KB (I+D) L1 cache per core, 1 MB of L2 cache per core cluster, 64 MB of L3 system cache, a quad-channel DDR4 controller, and 32 lanes of PCI-E Gen 4. The SG2042 contains no integrated graphics solution.

The Milk-V Pioneer incorporates this highly threaded RISC-V SoC with a modular and expandable standard mATX motherboard featuring four DIMM slots with support for up to 128 GB of DDR4, three full-length PCI-E slots wired for Gen 4 x8, two M.2 M-Key PCI-E Gen 3 x4, one M.2 E-Key for PCI-E 3.0 x1 and USB 2.0, eight USB 3.2 10 Gbps ports, five SATA 6 Gbps ports, and a pair of 2.5G Ethernet ports. Crucial T700 Gen 5 SSD Throttles Down to HDD Performance Levels Without a Cooler

Crucial T700, the company's flagship M.2 NVMe Gen 5 SSD, runs hot—like every other drive based on the Phison E26-series controller (such as the Corsair MP700). ComputerBase.de discovered what the drive does without some sort of cooling. The E26 controller has a Tjmax value of around 86°C, and what happens when it's reached depends on the drive in question. The Corsair MP700 can turn itself off to protect the controller—something that will definitely cause your machine to hang with a BSOD.

The Crucial T700, on the other hand, aggressively throttles down the controller in an attempt to lower temperatures. While the drive won't stop (and your machine won't hang), its performance drops to hard drive levels, with CrystalDiskMark (CDM) measurements pointing to around 101 MB/s (of course, with much lower access times than a HDD). Both Crucial and Corsair offer the drive with large heatsinks, and recommend users to use them. This should severely limit the adoption of Gen 5 NVMe SSDs among notebooks, where the notebook chassis has room for only bare drives. However, some OEMs specializing in larger high-end gaming notebooks and desktop-replacement workstations, can find ways to connect the drives to the notebook's main cooling system using flattened heatpipes. Nextorage Readying NE5N Gen 5 SSD Range With Bulky Heatsink

Nextorage Japan is preparing its NE5N range of PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs for launch in early June - listings have emerged on Newegg for 2 TB and 1 TB models - with a product page appearing recently on the company's (Japanese language) website. These units boast read and write speeds rated for operation up to 10 GB/s, and are based on Phison's E26 PCIe Gen 5 controller. Nextorage started off as a provider of PlayStation 5-oriented PCIe Gen 4 SSD products, due to company ties to Sony Corporation, but its upcoming NE5N range indicates that it intends to target buyers within the enthusiast PC market.

The initial batch of cutting edge SSDs are unlikely to end up in any PS5 consoles, thanks to a sizable dual formation heatsink - the Japanese company has filed a patent for the bulky two-level structure and heatpipe combination design. Gen 5 SSDs are said to be difficult to tame in terms of heat output, and manufacturers are going to great lengths (and sizes) to provide adequate cooling solutions in advance. Future versions of Nextorage Japan's NE5N NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 5 SSDs are being refined for compact PCs and laptops, so it will be interesting to find out about the intended thermal tempering for more cramped environments.

ASUS Launches ExpertCenter PN53 Powered by AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Processors

ASUS today announced ExpertCenter PN53, a mini PC that harnesses the power of the latest AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors and AMD Radeon 600M series graphics. ExpertCenter PN53 features a triple-storage design that can accommodate a variety of storage combinations. Two PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs and DDR5 memory ensure fast boot-up and app loading times. In addition, ExpertCenter PN53 includes cleverly designed cooling features, AI-powered noise-cancelation technology for improved voice communications, and can support a single 8K monitor or up to four 4K monitors.

ExpertCenter PN53 offers up to 34% better single-thread performance and up to a 29% boost in multithread performance, compared to the previous PN51 model. In PCMark 10 Essentials group tests, ExpertCenter PN53 showed a 10% improvement in web browsing, videoconferencing, and app start-up times. Akasa Intros Turing AC Pro Fanless Case

Akasa introduced what is essentially the 2nd generation of its compact Turing fanless NUC case. The new Turing AC Pro, as its name suggests, is designed for the Intel NUC 13 Pro "Arena Canyon," and retains its distinctive cuboidal shape, and a volume of 2.8 liters. What's new is that the block that draws heat from the SoC now features a pair of 6 mm-thick copper heatpipes that spread heat across the extruded aluminium panels that make up the body of the case, and which double up as a heatsink. The introduction of these heatpipes increase the cooling capacity of the case to 40 W (up from 35 W). The case also includes a custom M.2 SSD heatsink.

The Akasa Turing AC Pro measures 95 mm x 260 mm x 113.5 mm (WxDxH), and supports NUC motherboards in the 4x4 inch UCFF form-factor. The front-panel I/O holes includes openings for two USB 3.x type-A ports, and a 4-pole headset jack. The rear I/O cutouts include DC-in, two HDMI, two USB type-A, two USB type-C, and an Ethernet. Akasa includes optional power bricks. For the Core i5 and Core i7 models of NUC 13 Pro, it offers a 120 W brick, and for the Core i3 models, there's a 90 W one, both operate at 19 V DC. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability information yet.
