Microsoft: Only Consoles Supporting Full RDNA 2 Capabilities Are Xbox Series X and Series S, Excludes PlayStation 5

Microsoft has today published another article on its Xbox Wire blog, dedicated to all the news regarding the Xbox consoles and its ecosystem. In the light of yesterday's launch of AMD Radeon RDNA 2 graphics cards, Microsoft has congratulated its partner and provider of processors SoCs for their next-generation consoles. Besides the celebrations and congratulations, Microsoft has proceeded to show off what the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles are capable of, and how they integrate the RDNA 2 architecture. The company notes that there are hardware accelerated DirectX Raytracing, Mesh Shaders, Sampler Feedback, and Variable Rate Shading units built-in, so game developers can take advantage of it.

Another interesting point Microsoft made was that "Xbox Series X|S are the only next-generation consoles with full hardware support for all the RDNA 2 capabilities AMD showcased today." What this translates into is that Microsoft is the only console maker that uses the full RDNA 2 potential. This could leave Sony out in the dark with its PlayStation 5 console, meaning that it does not support all the features of AMD's new GPU architecture. There are not any specific points, however, we have to wait and see what Sony has left out, if anything.

Intel Xeon Scalable "Ice Lake-SP" 28-core Die Detailed at Hot Chips - 18% IPC Increase

Intel in the opening presentation of the Hot Chips 32 virtual conference detailed its next-generation Xeon Scalable "Ice Lake-SP" enterprise processor. Built on the company's 10 nm silicon fabrication process, "Ice Lake-SP" sees the first non-client and non-mobile deployment of the company's new "Sunny Cove" CPU core that introduces higher IPC than the "Skylake" core that's been powering Intel microarchitectures since 2015. While the "Sunny Cove" core itself is largely unchanged from its implementation in 10th Gen Core "Ice Lake-U" mobile processors, it conforms to the cache hierarchy and tile silicon topology of Intel's enterprise chips.

The "Ice Lake-SP" die Intel talked about in its Hot Chips 32 presentation had 28 cores. The "Sunny Cove" CPU core is configured with the same 48 KB L1D cache as its client-segment implementation, but a much larger 1280 KB (1.25 MB) dedicated L2 cache. The core also receives a second fused multiply/add (FMA-512) unit, which the client-segment implementation lacks. It also receives a handful new instruction sets exclusive to the enterprise segment, including AVX-512 VPMADD52, Vector-AES, Vector Carry-less Multiply, GFNI, SHA-NI, Vector POPCNT, Bit Shuffle, and Vector BMI. In one of the slides, Intel also detailed the performance uplifts from the new instructions compared to "Cascade Lake-SP".

DeepCool Rolls Out the MATREXX 55 PWM 2F E-ATX Case

DeepCool today rolled out the MATREXX 55 PWM 2F, a variant of the original MATREXX 55 from 2018, but a sibling of the more recent MATREXX 55 Mesh 4F from earlier this year, which replaces the tempered glass front panel with an airy steel mesh that lets the front intake fans breathe better. What sets this case apart from the Mesh 4F is the set of pre-installed fans. While the 4F includes four DC fans (three pre-installed along the front intake and one at the rear exhaust), the new MATREXX 55 PWM 2F includes just two fans, one at the front and the other out back. It's just that these included fans are of a higher quality, with 4-pin PWM input, and possibly a higher service life bearing.

The case is otherwise identical to the Mesh 4F, with its horizontally partitioned interior with room for motherboards up to E-ATX length, graphics cards that are up to 37 cm long, and CPU coolers up to 16.8 cm in height. Storage areas include two 3.5-inch drive bays that can each hold 2.5-inch drives, and two additional 2.5-inch mounts. Among the fan mounts are three 140/120 mm front, two 140/120 mm top, and a 120 mm rear exhaust. The case measures 440 mm x 210 mm x 480 mm (HxWxD), weighing 6.6 kg. The company didn't reveal pricing, but it could be identical to the Mesh 4F, at around $80.

Microsoft DirectX 12 Ultimate: Why it Helps Gamers Pick Future Proof Graphics Cards

Microsoft Thursday released the DirectX 12 Ultimate logo. This is not a new API with any new features, but rather a differentiator for graphics cards and game consoles that support four key modern features of DirectX 12. This helps consumers recognize the newer and upcoming GPUs, and tell them apart from some older DirectX 12 capable GPUs that were released in the mid-2010s. For a GPU to be eligible for the DirectX 12 Ultimate logo, it must feature hardware acceleration for ray-tracing with the DXR API; must support Mesh Shaders, Variable Rate Shading (VRS), and Sampler Feedback (all of the four). The upcoming Xbox Series X console features this logo by default. Microsoft made it absolutely clear that the DirectX 12 Ultimate logo isn't meant as a compatibility barrier, and that these games will work on older hardware, too.

As it stands, the "Navi"-based Radeon RX 5000 series are "obsolete", just like some Turing cards from the GeForce GTX 16-series. At this time, the only shipping product which features the logo is NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 20-series and the TITAN RTX, as they support all the above features.

The MasterBox MB320L ARGB is a Micro-ATX PC case with two pre-installed ARGB fans and honeycomb mesh ventilation on either side of the DarkMirror front panel. The DarkMirror acrylic front panel is smoked a shade darker to sharpen the contrast of the ARGB fans pre-installed behind it, highlighting its best features.

DeepCool MATREXX 55 Mesh 4F Loses the Glass Facade for an Airy Mesh

One of the emerging trends with tempered glass front faces is the option to have a metal mesh front panel that serves as an airy intake, as more PC builders opt to install radiators there. The MATREXX 55 Mesh 4F from DeepCool follows this trend, and loses the prominent tempered glass front facade to a black mesh intake over the three 120 mm fan mounts. The rest of its design is identical to that of the original. A tinted tempered glass panel continues to dominate the left side. Behind it is a conventional horizontally-partitioned layout. The bottom compartment has room for two 3.5-inch drive bays, Two additional 2.5-inch drives can be mounted along the motherboard tray, which has room for graphics cards up to 37 cm in length, and CPU coolers up to 16.8 cm in height. DeepCool is including four 120 mm fans that have addressable RGB LED illumination; three of which are factory-fitted along the front intakes, and one at the rear exhaust. The company didn't reveal pricing.
