Intel "Emerald Rapids" 8592+ and 8558U Xeon CPUs with 64C and 48C Configurations Spotted

Intel's next-generation Emerald Rapids Xeon lineup is just around the corner, and we are now receiving more leaks as the launch nears. Today, we get to see leaks of two models: a 64-core Xeon 8592+ Platinum and a 48-core Xeon 8558U processor. First is the Xeon 8592+ Platinum, which is possibly Intel's top-end design with 64 cores and 128 threads. Running at the base frequency of 1.9 GHz, the CPU can boost up to 3.9 GHz. This SKU carries 488 MB of total cache, where 120 MB is dedicated to L2 and 320 MB is there for L3. With a TDP of 350 Watts, the CPU can even be adjusted to 420 Watts.

Next up, we have the Xeon 8558U processor, which has been spotted in Geekbench. The Xeon 8558U is a 48-core, 96-threaded CPU with a 2.0 GHz base clock whose boost frequency has yet to be shown or enabled, likely because it is an engineering sample. It carries 96 MB of L2 cache and 260 MB of L3 cache, making for a total of 356 MB of cache (which includes L1D and L1I as well). Both of these SKUs should launch with the remaining models in the Emerald Rapids family, dubbed 5th generation Xeon Scalable, on December 14 this year.

"Downfall" Intel CPU Vulnerability Can Impact Performance By 50%

Intel has recently revealed a security vulnerability named Downfall (CVE-2022-40982) that impacts multiple generations of Intel processors. The vulnerability is linked to Intel's memory optimization feature, exploiting the Gather instruction, a function that accelerates data fetching from scattered memory locations. It inadvertently exposes internal hardware registers, allowing malicious software access to data held by other programs. The flaw affects Intel mainstream and server processors ranging from the Skylake to Rocket Lake microarchitecture. The entire list of affected CPUs is here. Intel has responded by releasing updated software-level microcode to fix the flaw. However, there's concern over the performance impact of the fix, potentially affecting AVX2 and AVX-512 workloads involving the Gather instruction by up to 50%.

Phoronix tested the Downfall mitigations and reported varying performance decreases on different processors. For instance, two Xeon Platinum 8380 processors were around 6% slower in certain tests, while the Core i7-1165G7 faced performance degradation ranging from 11% to 39% in specific benchmarks. While these reductions were less than Intel's forecasted 50% overhead, they remain significant, especially in High-Performance Computing (HPC) workloads. The ramifications of Downfall are not restricted to specialized tasks like AI or HPC but may extend to more common applications such as video encoding. Though the microcode update is not mandatory and Intel provides an opt-out mechanism, users are left with a challenging decision between security and performance. Executing a Downfall attack might seem complex, but the final choice between implementing the mitigation or retaining performance will likely vary depending on individual needs and risk assessments.

Seasonic Launches Updated Prime PX and Prime TX ATX 3.0 Power Supplies

Seasonic has launched the updated Prime PX 1600 Watt PSU that TPU spotted at Computex earlier this month, alongside two new Prime TX models at 1300 and 1600 Watt. The three models all adhere to the ATX 3.0 standard, unlike its predecessors. However, it appears that Seasonic hasn't as yet, at least, decided to update its lower Wattage models to the ATX 3.0 standard. Both 1600 Watt models feature a pair of 12VHPWR connectors, whereas the 1300 Watt model gets to make do with a single 12VHPWR connector. All three models feature no less than nine CPU/PCIe 12 V connectors and six peripheral connectors for modular cables.

The Prime PX is rated for 80 Plus Platinum and the Prime TX for 80 Plus Titanium and this appears to be the only major difference between the two models. Other interesting features include a 135 mm fan with fluid dynamic bearings and a digital hybrid fan control, as well as a bundles basic PSU tester. Both models also come with a 12 year warranty. Price wise, the Prime PX-1600 will retail for US$509.99/€459.99, with the Prime TX-1300 going for US$519.99/€479.99 and finally the Prime TX-1600 will set you back US$609.99/€549.99, suggesting a steep price premium for only a marginally more efficient PSU.

Seasonic Shows ATX 3.0 and PCIe Gen5 PSUs, MagFlow Fans, and Goes Industrial at Computex 2023

Seasonic had a lot to show at Computex 2023, including its full range of power supply units from the PRIME, VERTEX, and FOCUS series, that are now fully compliant with ATX 3.0 and PCIe Gen 5 specifications. The star of the show were obviously the PRIME PX-1600, PRIME Fanless TX-700, and the FOCUS SPX-750, which is a compact SFX PSU with modular design.

be quiet!, a German company focusing on creating PC components and accessories, had a strong presence at Computex 2023. Showing off its cases and power supplies, the company introduced a few additions to its portfolio of offerings. For starters, be quiet! has introduced a new case series called Shadow Base. The new Shadow Base lineup is focused on maximum airflow and maximum performance, where the company has made a new open mesh design that allows for "exceptionally high airflow." Inaugurating model of the series is the Shadow Base 800, which comes in three flavors: standard, DX, and FX. The standard edition is just a regular case without flashy RGB; the DX model has an RGB strip, while the FX model is tailored for maximum RGB illumination across the case. Cougar has presented its ATX 3.0 standard PSU models at this year's Computex event - in the shape of Polar X2 and GEX X2 offerings - with both families sporting HDB fans and 12+4 Pin 12VHPWR connectors for PCI Express 5.0 support. The Polar X2 has been introduced as the company's next generation flagship power supply unit - it is fully modular and 80 Plus Platinum certified. Cougar boasts that its pair of Polar X2 1200 W and 1050 W units will "service the new era of graphics cards, driving smarter, greener and more reliable power performance." These PSUs feature 100% Japanese-manufactured capacitors - the premium-grade components are advertised to extend unit operational lifespans by 300%. Cougar boasts that its range-topping power supply is more than prepared to take on the most modern and demanding GPU technologies, including NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 40 Series cards.

The GEX X2 lineup is comprised of 1200, 1000, 850, 750 and 650 W output offerings according to larger banners exhibited at Computex - Cougar's own website and online PR material only list 1000 W and 850 W. The fully modular GEX X2 is advertised as one of the most compact energy-efficient 80 Plus Gold certified PSUs - it also packs high quality 100% Japanese-manufactured capacitors. Cougar reckons that the unit's diminutive dimensions (length is measured as 140 mm) somewhat hide an energy efficient powerhouse. The GEX X2's modest footprint opens up many options when it comes to various PC build sizes and power requirements.

Thermaltake Brings New Toughpower SFX Power Supplies to Computex 2023

Thermaltake has unveiled a whole new range of Toughpower SFX power supplies at the Computex 2023 show in Taipei. Since smaller SFF builds are becoming quite popular these days, it does not come as a surprise that Thermaltake is pushing this PSU form-factor to a whole new level. Thermaltake is not a stranger when it comes to SFX power supplies but its current Toughpower SFX Gold lineup will be expanded with new higher output models and given an ATX 3.0 specification, and it is introducing the new Toughpower SFX Platinum series.

The Thermaltake Toughpower SFX Gold lineup was already available in 450 W, 550 W, 650 W, and 750 W versions, but now, Thermaltake is bringing new 750 W, 850 W, and 1000 W models, which are all compatible with ATX 3.0 specifications and feature a native PCIe 5.0 12+4-pin modular interface. The Toughpower SFX Gold 750 W and 850 W models will use a standard SFX form-factor, while the 1000 W model will be based on a slightly longer SFX-L form factor. The star of the PSU show is the Toughpower SFX Platinum series, also coming in 750 W, 850 W, and 1000 W models, and as the name suggests, these have 80 Plus Platinum efficiency. The Toughpower SFX Platinum will also be compatible with ATX 3.0 specifications and feature the same native PCIe 5.0 12+4-pin modular interface. Nier: Automata Sold 7.5 Million Copies, Creator Evasive Over Possible Sequel

The official NieR Series Twitter account declared a sales milestone this week, and showed a great appreciation for its fanbase: "You'll be delighted to hear more than 7.5 million copies of NieR: Automata have been sold or shipped to date. Thank you for your love and support!" PlatinumGames' action role-playing game has accumulated very decent numbers over a six year period - NieR: Automata first arrived on PlayStation 4 and PC back in March of 2017. Thanks to highly favorable reviews from the computer game press, and word of mouth spread throughout the gaming community, the unlikely spin-off (from the Drakengard series) has become an enduring classic. It also helps that NieR: Automata broke free from being a PS4 and PC timed exclusive, and later on found its way onto the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

It is probably safe to assume that NieR: Automata has made a return on its production budget, so talk naturally turns to the prospects of a hypothetical third entry in the series. PlatinumGames and the game's creator, Yoko Taro, have remained very tight-lipped about a possible continuation. The normally eccentric video game director took a more straightforward approach when sharing good news about his game's healthy sales figures: "It seems that 7.5 million copies have been sold. It's so awesome that it makes me dizzy. I can't exceed this number for the rest of my life…I can only thank everyone who supported me!" Taro has taken a more evasive stance when dealing with questions regarding a third Nier title.

The PSU meets Cybenetics Platinum electrical switching efficiency ratings, Its 120 mm dual ball-bearing fan features idle fan-off as long as the load is under 200 W. Among the connectors provided by the SilverStone SX1000R Platinum are one 24-pin ATX, two 8-pin EPS, one 16-pin 12VHPWR with 600 W continuous power delivery capability, four 6+2 pin PCIe power, eight SATA power, three Molex, and one Berg. AMD 4th Generation EPYC "Genoa" Processors Benchmarked

Yesterday, AMD announced its latest addition to the data center family of processors called EPYC Genoa. Named the 4th generation EPYC processors, they feature a Zen 4 design and bring additional I/O connectivity like PCIe 5.0, DDR5, and CXL support. To disrupt the cloud, enterprise, and HPC offerings, AMD decided to manufacture SKUs with up to 96 cores and 192 threads, an increase from the previous generation's 64C/128T designs. Today, we are learning more about the performance and power aspects of the 4th generation AMD EPYC Genoa 9654, 9554, and 9374F SKUs from 3rd party sources, and not the official AMD presentation. Tom's Hardware published a heap of benchmarks consisting of rendering, compilation, encoding, parallel computing, molecular dynamics, and much more.

In the comparison tests, we have AMD EPYC Milan 7763, 75F3, and Intel Xeon Platinum 8380, a current top-end Intel offering until Sapphire Rapids arrives. Comparing 3rd-gen EPYC 64C/128T SKUs with 4th-gen 64C/128T EPYC SKUs, the new generation brings about a 30% increase in compression and parallel compute benchmarks performance. Intel Sapphire Rapids 56-Core ES Processor Boosts to 3.3 GHz at 420 Watts

Intel is slowly transitioning its data center customers to a new processor generation called Sapphire Rapids. Today, thanks to the hardware leaker Yuuki_ans we have more profound insights into the top-end 56-core Sapphire Rapids processor and its power settings. According to the leak, we have information on either Xeon Platinum 8476 or Platinum 8480 designs that are equipped with 56 cores and 112 threads. This model was running at the base frequency of 1.9 GHz and a boost frequency of 3.3 GHz. Single-core can boost to 3.7 GHz if the report is giving a correct reading. Remember that this is only an engineering sample, so the final target speeds could differ. It carries 112 MB of L2 and 105 MB of L3 cache, and this sample was running with 1 TB of DDR5 memory with CL40-39-38-76 timings.

Perhaps the most exciting finding is the power configuration of this SKU. Intel has enabled this CPU to consume 350 Watts in PL1 rating, with up to 420 Watts in PL2 performance mode. The enforced BIOS power limit rating is set at an astonishing 764 Watts, which could happen with AVX-512 enabled. Final TDP ratings are yet to be disclosed; however, these Sapphire Rapids processors are shaping to be relatively power-hungry chips.

HPE Lists 40-Core Intel Ice Lake-SP Xeon Server Processor

Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the company focused on making enterprise hardware and software, has today mistakenly listed some of Intel's upcoming 3rd generation Xeon Scalable processors. Called Ice Lake-SP, the latest server processor generation is expected to launch sometime in the coming days, with a possible launch date being the March 23rd "Intel Unleashed" webcast. The next generation of processors will finally bring a new vector of technologies Intel needs in server space. That means the support for PCIe 4.0 protocol for higher speed I/O and octa-channel DDR4 memory controller for much greater bandwidth. The CPU lineup will for the first time use Intel's advanced 10 nm node called 10 nm SuperFin.

Today, in the leaked HPE listing, we get to see some of the Xeon models Intel plans to launch. Starting from 32-core models, all the way to 40-core models, all SKUs above 28 cores are supposed to use dual die configuration to achieve high core counts. The limit of a single die is 28 cores. HPE listed a few models, with the highest-end one being the Intel Xeon Platinum XCC 8380 processor. It features 40 cores with 80 threads and a running frequency of 2.3 GHz. If you are wondering about TDP, it looks like the 10 nm SuperFin process is giving good results, as the CPU is rated only for 270 Watts of power.

The Penguin Computing TundraAP system relies on Intel's S9200WK server system. In a 1U server, Penguin Computing puts two of those in one system, with a twist. The company implements a power disaggregation system, which is designed to handle and remove the heat coming from those 400 W TPD monster processors. This means that the PSU is moved from the server itself and moved on a special rack, so the heat from the CPUs wouldn't affect PSUs. The company uses Open Compute Project standards and says it improves efficiency by 15%. To cool those chips, Penguin Computing uses a direct-to-chip liquid cooling system. This is a huge achievement as the density is quite big. Intel today announced its future Intel Xeon Scalable processor family (codename Cooper Lake) will offer customers up to 56 processor cores per socket and built-in AI training acceleration in a standard, socketed CPU as part of its mainline Intel Xeon Scalable platforms, with availability in the first half of 2020. The breakthrough platform performance delivered within the high-core-count Cooper Lake processors will leverage the capabilities built into the Intel Xeon Platinum 9200 series, which today is gaining momentum among the world's most demanding HPC customers, including HLRN, Advania, 4Paradigm, and others.
