ATI Catalyst 10.4 WHQL Driver Suite Released

AMD released the final iteration of Catalyst 10.4 graphics driver suite. The WHQL-signed drivers keep up with the company's one month update cycle, and introduce a wide range of changes. To begin with, game-specific performance improvements in this release are confined to STALKER - Clear Sky, with up to 6% improvement in frame-rates for the Radeon HD 5970, and up to 3% for HD 5800 and HD 5700 series GPUs. There are changes to the video-decoding features, namely addition of H.264 Level 5.1 support, and a fix that reduces the "mosquito noise" seen in highly-compressed video.

Improvements to the video-transcoding capabilities are also a highlight of this release, with enhanced support for Windows 7 drag-and-drop video converter, namely performance increment, support for new H.264 formats such as MTS and WMV9 Complex profile interlaced content, and the ability to toggle GPU-acceleration from Catalyst Control Center. Support for the ATI Video converter is now available in the advanced view of the ATI Catalyst Control Center.

A list of minor fixes follows.

  • Desktop mouse cursor will no longer intermittently appear enlarged
  • Pressing the "Page Down" button while configuring the last display in Eyefinity group will now properly switch to the next display instead of closing the bezel user interface
  • Shortcut keys to configure the bezel now functions properly
  • "Battlefield 2: Bad Company" maps no longer takes unusually long to load for ATI Radeon HD 5000 Series
  • Performance on 2D applications and benchmarks has now been fixed
  • Flashing no longer visible in "Shattered Horizon" game with CrossFire enabled
  • Changing in-game resolution in "Alien vs. Predator" no longer causes screen flickering under multi-GPU configuration
  • Tint setting under Catalyst Control Center - Basic Color now displays smooth transition when adjusted for Blu-ray playback
  • In-game anti-alias now functions properly when other in-game options like Volumetric Effects are enabled in "Empire: Total War" and "Napoleon: Total War"games
  • Flickering corruption and flashing textures are no longer visible in "Battlefield 2: Bad Company"

What the hell is with this dumb Transcoder. They say it's accessible from within Advanced CCC mode but i can't see it anywhere. I used to have it under wizard mode and now it's even gone from there. And yes, i've installed that crap separately... WTF!?

Stupid crap. I had to restart the runtime. Of course dumb installer didn't mention that anywhere...
Besides, this shit is useless. Whatever DivX i tried to feed into it it was complaining about not supported codec. And what's the point of H264 encoding if you can't import anything useful or at least MKV. Lame and useless. And incredibly slow (GPU ownage my ass). I can encode videos faster in FormatFactory. And i'm not restricted to 5 formats. Sigh. Why they even waste time for this useless thing?
Every time i try it with enthusiasm i get even more disapointed. I've changed 4 series of cards (x1950 Pro, HD4850, HD4870 and now HD5850) and nothing has changed.

yeah i dislike how resolution is hardcoded as well... i have a 480i DVD and i want a 480P H264 MKV... wheres my choices?

Is there really no way of importing MKV files? I mean, that would be the whole point of it, to convert 1080p MKV file into smaller DivX that can be played on any DVD.
Plus i'm not sure i could import HD video from Nikon D300s.
Any way to add additional codecs? Otherwise this is just useless.

Why cant ATI release good drivers right now? This is bullshit. I been holding off on drivers because of all the problems with every release.

I would goto Nvidia but they have no cards that I am interested in.

apart from the sub-par layout of CCC, what problems are you (Nick89) talking about??
Ive gone from 10.1 to 10.2 to 10.3 without a single issue whatsoever.

10.4a and 10.4 messed up H.264 DXVA decoding with videos that have 480p/i resolution. I just tested with 10.3 and they work fine. Nice job ATI. :P

Mine's tested on 480p Matroska (.mkv) video files. Dattebayo's encodes seem to work fine though. 10.3 OpenGL 4 Beta seems to utilize DXVA properly compared to 10.4a.

So one is broke, which worked fine on 10.3
However here is the new advantage:

what codec are you using? i'm using FFDSHOW. if you're using an ATI one, that could explain our differences.

right you're using the MPC decoder, its a piece of crap. get the latest CCCP beta and use FFDSHOW, theres a guide in my sig how to get it working in DXVA.

normally i'd say a poorly encoded file that doesnt work with hardware accel...

but really, this isnt the thread for it. Start a new one if you want, or discuss it in the thread linked in my sig - we've derailed this news thread enough.

I already did.
And I already checked out the problem with these, it was the 10.4 drivers. Because going back to 10.3 solves the issue, but obviously breaks the other vids ;)

just like how the 10.4 drivers dont have any of the updates in 10.4a, the entire 10.4 range may be missing updates from 10.3 (and will reappear in 10.5)

It seems like they have a leapfrog effect... two drivers in production at any given time, so the 'newer' driver may not contain fixes from the 'older' driver

From what I can gather, they are releasing drivers now when they send them off for WHQL certification. 10.4a will probably be released as a hotfix soon, pending that certification. THat's also why it took so long for this release...waiting for approval.

At least they are showinbg they are working on issues!

I dont have a problem with DXVA and 10.4a. I stopped using DXVA mostly though because of the lack of ability to use filters, which nowadays i use mass of in FFDshow tryouts.

Also I noticed in preview drivers and betas they tend to include the whole packages, but for actual releases they dont include it all together. Things like hydravision and the transcoder are separate downloads.

alexsubriI will try the 10.4 when I get home ... I have the 10.4a but is it me, or does BFBC2 "Join Game" not "Map Loading" seem to be longer? I don't know if it's a BFBC2 bug or ATI bug because this happen after BFBC2 updated it's game ... anybody else have this problem?

In case you don't understand me, when you die you respawn, after like 10 seconds, I will hit "Join Game" and it freezes (brings my FPS down to 1 FPS) and then it loads back up and I have to press "Join Game like 10 times until I am finally available to respawn ...?:banghead:
bump? Anybody else experiencing similar problems?

i get a brief lag spike upon first loading a map (it lags, but i can join etc) and it goes away after 10 seconds or so. its better than the long load times.

ShRoOmAlIsTiCis the x264 l 5.1 fix for all 2k and up cards or just the newer 5k series
It doesn't work very well with the HD 2000 series (UVD). There are mixed reports on HD 3000 series (UVD+), but UVD2 (HD 4-5000 series) and above does not seem to have any issues. Hopefully this will be ironed out with either 10.5 or a newer MPC-HC build (than 1824).
