Elpida and Rambus Sign Patent License Agreement

Rambus Inc., one of the world's premier technology licensing companies, today announced that it has renewed their patent license agreement with Elpida Memory, Inc., Japan's leading global supplier of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM). This agreement covers Elpida's range of memory products including SDR, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, LPDDR, LPDDR2, GDDR3 and GDDR5 DRAM.

"We are extremely pleased to have licensed another one of the top three memory companies. This agreement continues our licensing momentum and renews a winning partnership that has produced best-in-class memory solutions for customers," said Sharon Holt, senior vice president and general manager of the Semiconductor Business Group at Rambus. "Elpida's customers now have the full benefit of licensed products using our patented innovations to enrich the consumer experience of electronic systems."

In addition to its leadership in industry-standard DRAM products, Elpida ships the world's fastest memory device, the 7.2Gbps XDR DRAM, based on the Rambus XDR memory architecture.

Rambus now has more money to pay their lawyers for their annual sue-athon.

Agreed. And licensing GDDR5 is now going to pave the way for them to sue everyone for not licensing it as well. That is what Rambus does. I wish they would just die a horrible death already.

I don't quite understand how can they just own all the RAM tech. Unless they got some ridiculous patent like "Patent right to a RAM looking chip". This could potentially grant the stuff they are doing right now...

They have lots of patents in SDRAM tech. They were going to be part of the JEDEC but ran away after learning that they have to agree to disclose all patents and not suing JEDEC members for them.
Evil bastards.

I don't like her word use there. It sounds like she's pointing at the rest of the industry and saying "These guys are legal, you're not." or something to that effect. She's also boasting that they hold the patents, which is pretty officious if you ask me. How does using an officially licensed product enrich your experience?

I don't understand how the "offenders" got their hands on the info to make the offending products...

Nice for Elpida so if GDDR6 comes along, Rambus will be the inventor of this? Ridiculous....I mean their RDRAM didnt work so now they are suing everyone and licensing stuff. Asinine.
