Radeon HD 6990 ''Antilles'' Graphics Card Pictured

A few days earlier, AMD's Matt Skynner displayed the company's newest graphics card that seeks to extend the performance leadership currently held by Radeon HD 5970. The dual-GPU AMD Radeon HD 6990, codenamed "Antilles", makes use of two 40 nm "Cayman" GPU, which powers the single-GPU HD 6950 and HD 6970. The core configuration of Cayman in Antilles is not known. The card itself keeps up with the product styling that all Radeon HD 6000 series carry, it's about as long as the HD 5970.

This time, AMD is toying with a revolutionary new cooler design that makes use of a cylindrical blower (like ones used in air-curtains, on a much smaller scale) to draw air from the rear portion of the cooler, and circulate through the complex vapor-chamber enhanced heatsink inside. In other words, the card lacks a fan intake hole where it's typically located, but the rear portion serves that purpose. Power is drawn in from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors. AMD is expected to release the new enthusiast graphics card in this quarter.

LAN_deRf_HANo, it doesn't say that. It just says it draws air from the back, unless you're taking "circulates" as meaning it dumps the air out the way it came in, which would be truly awful. Such a narrow space for intake and exhaust to share means it's going to suck in it's own exhaust. Given the idiocy of that I'm left having to believe it will dump all the heat from both cores directly into your case. That's fine for an aftermarket solution but a stock cooler shouldn't be counting on the consumer having decent airflow. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing ends up shipping with the conventional blower design.
I took it to mean the air would be sucked in via the back portion of the card and exhausted out via the backplate. Essentially like the HD5970 now but with the radial fan sucking from the back instead of through the top. For a radial fan this actually makes sense (as long as the blades are big enough so it doesn't have to spin too fast).

Coupled with the vapor chamber cooling this could be enough to cool the card without having to go triple slot (fouling potential crossfire setups).

Crazy 4 TPU!!!
Can guarantee i probably won't be able to afford it.

Can't wait to see some performance numbers though.:)

So this card will suck the hot air exhausted from the bottom mounted PSU, adds the heat of 2 GPUs and throw it into the case, BRILLIANT!!! :banghead:

well its good to see AMD didn't design the card around specific cases seeing how most OEM's use a top mounted PSU. heck most cases use a top mounted PSU.

for me this card would suck in nothing from my PSU in my lian li RF case, from the punched grill side panel of my HTPC and unless i had 2 of them the big gaping hole in between the PSU and card in my haf932 :toast:

i think he is forgetting that this video card has the same design as every other video card ever made

cdawallheck most cases use a top mounted PSU
I disagree. Most people who shed 700+ USD for such a card have a high end case with bottom mounted PSU. Even if there is a good space between the card and the PSU, the heat from the PSU will rise and get sucked into the card, and don't forget that most PSU fans don't spin fast most of the time so the exhaust air won't be pushed far away from the case. :shadedshu

I disagree. If the case has decent airflow, it's completely fine.

i have owned all of the ati/amd dual cards outside of the 5970 and i own several cases none of which the whole world ended because the PSU was at the bottom with the video card. in fact find me a video card that does not draw air the same way this one does. is there some magical gpu god that makes GPU's that have fans on the top?

3870X2 draws from the bottom

4850X2 draws from the bottom

4870X2 draws from bottom

5970 draws from bottom

7950GX2 SAME THING

9800GX2 still the SAME THING

i am seeing a pattern here its like video cards all have the SAME BASIC COOLER

Guys either you misunderstood the cooler design or I did. The way I saw it, this card will suck the air from the rear, in other words: will suck air from outside the case, the same holes where it usually exhausts air through. I saw a cad drawing on youtube supporting this a while ago, but I can't find it now.

BTW see my system specs, I now have a reference 5870 and I'm not new to the these stuff so I know how coolers were/are designed.

It sucks air in through the fan and out the back/front. That video you saw was not real. I'm sure it's been tried in engineering stages but the design is not efficient.

2DividedbyZero:roll: a VHS casette was atleast twice that size surely

ahhh the good ole dayz
A little bit smaller maybe.

If this thing sucks air from the outside and can also exhaust out later than I would really be impressed.

Two things I have to say on the cooler is this:

Show me a cooler on top of the card or venting from the top, all of the circuitry that gets real hot is on the bottom. Hence the coolers tend to suck from the bottom :O.

With my dual 1900's, they ran MUCH cooler with a fan blowing on them from the backside. With my 3870 it was the same thing. Surprisingly even the 5770 does. I would not rule out this fan system. The big question is how quiet it will be!
