Codemasters To Focus On Racing Games

Codemasters is giving up on action genre games such as Operation Flashpoint, to focus on its star racing game franchises such as DiRT, F1, and Grid. The British game studio will release make new installments to the three franchises under a new banner, Codemasters Racing. One of the first Codemasters Racing titles will be DiRT Showdown, slated for May 25. "Racing is our DNA, it is our heritage, it is our specialisation and it is our absolute focus going forward," said Codemasters communications chief Rich Eddy.

"We have kept our reputation for delivering best-in-class racing games, And best-in-class racing games is now our razor focus going forward. In racing, we are No.2 in Europe and that's not good enough. We want to take racing games across multiple platforms and genres. So that players can play anytime, anywhere and on any device," Eddy added. Codemasters is also setting up a free online community for players of DiRT, F1, and Grid, which gives them a single portable profile between the games, with a few added incentives. This online service is called Codemasters Racenet.

Sad to see some competition leave the FPS arena but I love DiRT so I can't complain too much!

Good to see a studio concentrate on their strengths.
Too many studios try to stretch their budgets getting into other competing genres and end up in the dumper.

So...are they going for arcade style or simulation?
Either way, DiRT 4 better have a decent rally part (4 countries/environments != variety) and no stupid day-1 DLC. If it has, CM is dead to me.
I'll stick to CMR series and RD3, which were their best titles so far.

well i hope they put more rallying back into their rally games, as i really really miss a proper WRC game, im not overly keen on racing big shit off roaders and buggy's but im not that offended either i am however offended at the lack of stages and rallying in dirt 2 and 3 one was ok on the rallying side ,id have liked more stages still though, and i think they are missing a great opertunity in that dirt 1 and 2's track should have been in 3 , for me im not bothered if they just plonk them in and ensure they render ok , im not expecting a remake of them ,just to continue raceing them in the newer engine:)

well it'd be 4 now but that looks insanely bad to me , im hopeing they have hid a tour da force of rallying in it somewhere i cant see

My guess would be EA/Need For Speed.

Can't wait for Grid 2. All of Codemasters' racing games are pretty boss.

If I had to take a guess, #1 must be Polyphony Digital. GT5 sold pretty well. But that's consoles, where CM is trying to compete with it's F1 series. On the PC, the simulation crown belongs either to rFactor, or SimBin's titles.
As for rally...most stay with the classics (CMR, RBR, etc...)...or Dirt3 for the graphics/sounds.

Yup they did thats why there was no Colin Mcrae branding on DiRT 3. Although they left it on DiRT 2 even though that was released after his death but there was a tribute championship in that game near the end of the single player career. I want codies to go back to more of a simulation game like cmr 2005 but unfortunately I suppose arcade racers appeal to more people.

Although I would call it more Ken Block DiRT 2 and DiRT 3, not enough rallying. :(

May as well, Op Flashpoint is absolute garbage. Anyone play Dragon Rising? Anyone else get shot in the face at 600m by a handgun? Anyone else have to shoot their demo-man in the face in order to take his kit and plant explosives on objectives?

The AI was even worse than ARMA's, and that's saying something.

Don't ya mean 600m though grass and tree's hehe. Dunno how their second one turned out but been burned once.

I like Arma AI for the most part they flank ya ass like crazy. but yes nothing like being shot out of a helli or a plane by some lucky guy lol.

If you really want to stretch the definition of racing, wouldn't Nintendo be #1 with its Mario Kart series?
