AMD Announces Radeon R9 290X

AMD announced market availability of the Radeon R9 290X, its new flagship graphics card, with which it plans to take on the likes of the GeForce GTX TITAN. Based on the swanky new 28 nm "Hawaii" silicon, the R9 290X features 2,816 stream processors, 176 texture memory units, 64 ROPs, and a 512-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 4 GB of memory. The chip offers hardware support for DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3, and is ready for AMD's ambitious Mantle API. Various AIB partners should begin offering their R9 290X cards today, which all stick to AMD's reference design. The biggest feature of the card, in the end, is its stunning price of $549.99. If it manages to beat the GTX TITAN, NVIDIA is in a world of pain with its high-end lineup.

Anandtech believes these things will stick out a good amount of heat. I think this guy had the right idea with his bitcoin miner. He used his watercooled 5970 to heat the bathroom floor. Pictures in the link.

He said his wife was bugging him to buy another video card to make it warmer. It's a win/win for everyone!

arterius2how am I wrong about it? I was simply stating scientific fact. nvm ^ repman explained it.
More rads and a water block would not only bring the temp down and keep it from down clocking.
It would then absolutely stomp any game on a 4k screen and for reasonable money = win to some. note I'm not saying it fits every use case but id have one and despite your hate of power use and heat , Tpu is the main cause of too much heat in my pc and many others ,and I wasn't checking my electric bill after hitting 5.6ghz on a Q6600 or 5ghz on this Fx 8250 , some just want a bit more or even worse just to see what number they get.
No mantle benches tut :p

...given the 780's age... i'd say nvidia lowers the seven 780 to or slightly below the 290's price point and then release the 780ti( with performance to surpass the 290) at the current 780's price point...

oops to get back on track i'm surprized Amd opened with that price... now all they have to do is move enough volume and its like Mario with a mushroom!!!! Truely exciting times !
